I need some advice on Lithium. I've read the reviews that are pretty positive, but I'm still not sure. I have cycling depression that just hangs on, despite excellent psychotherapy & a hefty daily dose of Paxil. I've been advised that maybe I'd like to try Lithium which may help to stop the cycling & give me longer even periods of wellness. I'm willing to give it a go, but for some reason, the idea of Lithium scares me and I'm worried about unpleasant side effects. If Lithium makes me drowsy, no way will I stick with it unless the drowsiness fades within a few days or a week (or so). Any advice for me?

When I was on Lithium I felt wonderful (first drug tried on me after dx of bp 1). I couldn't believe I could feel that way & I hoped it wouldn't end crashing into another depression. I DID get very drowsy on Lithium so I was prescribed Provigil. But then my blood tests showed that my kidneys had abnormal function. Couldn't get it cleared up so I had to get off the Lithium & start the journey to find new meds that would work for me.

Lithium has been around a long time & is very useful for so many people. I'd give it a try. Good luck.--Suzy P.S. Apparently I'm sensitive to drugs in that I get very drowsy on most of them (some to the point of falling asleep while driving--off that one!) so I'm still taking Provigil & Concerta, as well.

Lithium is a lifesaver for me. I've been on it for about two years and it has helped with the depression and the mania. Lithium did make me very drowsy for a few months until the doctor found the right dose. It takes a while to determine how much of it you need and they monitor your lithium level closely. Yes, it took a while before I didn't feel like a slug but after I got used to it, now I have no side effects except my hands temor a little. That's something that i got used to as well. I know several people who have been on this drug for over 20 years and it has helped them cope with their bipolar but everyone is different. If you do decide to give it a try, just be patient with yourself and give it time to work. I hope you feel better soon.
