Saw my pdoc today and we're going to reduce my effexor dose from 300mg to 150mg per day. Sounds like a big drop. I've read some scary stories about trying to come off of effexor, so I'm a little scared. But I'm excited that I'm starting to reduce the medication. I've been on this dose for almost 3 years. A little nervous, a little excited. Maybe I won't have any withdrawals, or if I do maybe they will be mild. Wish me luck! Let me know if you have any experience with effexor.

Decrease by no more than 37.5 mg per week, and you will be fine.

when i was on effexorxr, i lost 38 lbs. i only ate every two or three days. my doctor wouldn't help me come down off and my pharmacist helped me. taper very slowly. the withdrawal is horrible. don't go down more than 37.5 mgs and get used to that before you reduce more. it took me a long time and i wasn't on as high a dosage as you are. my head felt like it was full of tumbling rocks, i had electrical zaps and nausea. if you'll committ to slowly coming off, you'll be fine. just don't rush it...........xoxoxo pat ps. keep me updated.

I have been on Effexor XR for almost 7 yrs.........wow, I can't believe it has been that long.......sorry.. Reducing Effexor dose

Anyway, I currently take 600 mgs (for the past 2 yrs) and I too have heard the horror stories of withdrawel. But I have also heard that reducing it by a small dose (like psisc advised) every week is the way to go.

For me, I would love to increase the dose and will try again to get my pdoc to agree....I hate to add new meds.....

Well good luck and go slooooow!

Reducing Effexor dose I was on 300 mg of Effexor for five years and then I switched doctors and he wanted me to get down to 150 mg of Effexor per day which was done by cutting the dose by 37.5 mg per day for one-two weeks then cutting it again by 37.5 mg for another one-two weeks until I got down to 150 mg. Effexor is very difficult to wean. That is why you have been told to break it down very slowly over time. If you chop it in half, significant rebound side effects can occur and you may end up in distress. Talk this over with your psychiatrist. Good Luck.

Thanks for the posts and the advice to go slowly. Odd that my psychiatrist said to just drop it suddenly to 150mg from 300mg. That's my new prescription. I'll try it for now. The doctor is only a phone call away. Maybe he thinks its ok because I'm on abilify 30mgs. Maybe that will buffer the effects, since abilify has a way of modulating serotonin and dopamine. I guess we'll see. This is scary. Reducing Effexor dose

I went from 375mg to 0mg in one day. Not reccomended, but my old doctor refused to refill my prescription without another visit although I was done with the med and he knew I wanted to taper off. At this time I had moved over an hour away and had to switch docs, but of course couldnt get in and no one would throw more meds at me at the time. I will say, it took around a month to finally feel normal again.

Here's an update: It's been one week after slashing my dose from 300mg to 150mg. I've had NO withdrawals, thank goodness. I'm going to stay at this dose for 2 months and then reduce to 75mg. Hopefully it will go as well.
