My son just started Wellbutrin and depakote. He is currently hospitalized so when we saw him at visitation we noticed the difference in him immediately. He seems fidgety, itchy, and hyper. In 45 minutes with him he seemed like a different kid. Like he was high on marijuana or something! He has only been on them a day. Any experience with this? Is this normal? Is it initial reaction that will settle down?

When you say itchy that concerns me because it may be an allergy to one of them.

It is very odd that you would see a difference in one day. They are usually slow acting although maybe with wellbutrin that could be true.

The hyper wired feeling is definitely the wellbutrin it is the most activating, stimuatating anti depressant. I couldn't take it because of this, I thought I was on amphetamines. Everyone is different in how they react to these things and how effective they are.

Right now I would watch for allergy type symptoms. itchy, rash, hives, swelling, especially swelling in the face and throat area. Recently a girl here found she was allergic to wellbutrin with rash and itchy right away. It is rare but you should stop taking it right away.

If he is in hospital there could be alot going on so it is hard to say. What was he in for? I am guessing bi polar. How does he say he feels?

He is in for major depression (drank bleach), anxiety, and they are now starting to consider bipolar (although they don't want to "formally" diagnose him with it for some reason). He was on 200 mg of zoloft but they cut the dose to 100 mg when they started the depakote and wellbutrin the night before last. I'm telling you, it may not have had time to get in his system but he was a different kid! very scary to me!

200mg to 100mg zoloft is a big jump down, maybe he's experiencing withdrawals?

It's good he is in the hospital because they can monitor him for reactions.

I wouldn't worry too much about how different he is right now, he is also in a completely different environment and face to face with with his illness. Wait awhile and see how he is after a few days.

Could be Zoloft withdrawals since they replaced it with two totally different classes.

Most likely Wellburtin I think. It can be very fast acting and very activating. It was a long time ago that I took it but it may have acted right away and probably did. I could only handle two weeks. I thought I was doing meth amphetamine and I have done that before so I know what it feels like.

No you don't want them to jump on a diagnosis of bi polar right away. Once its in the chart it is there forever even if they change it later. I was mis diagnosed bi polar for seven years for a lot of complicated reasons.

I only asked because they gave him depakote for depression and not lamictal. A mood stabilizer is not usually prescribed for depression alone but Lamictal is now being used for MDD.

A bi polar diagnosis can be very complicated and it has a lot to due with his history. Has he ever had a full blown manic episode? Does he have a history of drug and alcohol abuse? some drugs mimic bi polar. Anti depressants can trigger hypo mania even if not bi polar. I am experiencing that myself right now with Fetzima. Slightly manic but it is balancing out.

Is he any better today? Did the itching go away?

And bleach. That is a pretty nasty chemical. I hope it didn't do any damage.

Please keep us posted. We are sincerely concerned for him and you. And get the help you need for you. For me I think it is harder for those around me than it is for me. I am used to it. They say it isn't but family needs a lot of support too.

There are also a couple of other sections on this site. I haven't been to them and I don't know how active they are.

I don't doubt it. A lot of people say they do not notice an effect right away but I seem to feel effects almost immediately. As an example, I just started Cymbalta yesterday and today I have already noticed a change in mood and a few side effects. Wellbutrin was the same for me, I had a rash and was itching by 2 day. So it's possible.

I hope he feels better soon. I've never been on more than 1 med at a time. I would imagine it's hard to determine which is causing the odd behavior.
