I have been on SSRIs for a very long time now. I'm a college student, but I don't drink often. One specific time that I did, I unfortunately had a lot. Part of the reason for that was that I wasn't feeling the effects of it. I didn't feel incapacitated or drunk in the least, but with the amount of alcohol I had I definitely should have. The friends I was drinking with were drunk and had the same amount as me. I know that alcohol is not recommended when you are on anti-depressants, but I did a little research and found that it isn't recommended because being on an anti-depressant can increase the effect of alcohol. I seem to have experienced a decreased effect. Anyone know why this is or have a similar experience?

It can not only increase the effect of the alcohol, but it can decrease the effect of the medication, since alcohol is a depressant.

That said, I used to drink all the time on my meds. SSRIs, SNRIs, benzos. I was also on stimulants too though -- Ritalin, then Adderall. I didn't give a ****. I quit drinking five years ago. I had a huge problem.

The reason why they say you shouldn't is because SSRIs cause sedation which, combined with the effects of alcohol, can be dangerous. SSRIs work to increase your levels of seratonin, which you probably know. That, combined with booze, can increase sedation. However, certain SSRIs will actually lower seratonin levels below the baseline after prolonged use. This could possibly be why you were able to drink as much as you did with little effect.

How long have you been on your SSRI? Which SSRI is it?

Cymbalta, 60mg -- for the depression.
Latuda, 40mg -- for the paranoia (delusional type).
Adderall, 40mg XR & 5 mg reg -- for the ADD.
Xanax, .5 mg as needed -- for the anxiety.
Topamax, 50mg -- still figuring this one out.

MDD, but possibly have some form of Bipolar Disorder. Then again, I could be paranoid . . .

Well, at least I still have my sense of humor.

At the time I was on Paxil, which I had been on for almost 10 years. I recently changed to Lexapro though. I guess maybe it was because I had been on Paxil for so long.

I've actually never had bad reactions to alcohol on any other med than TCA. That doesn't mean it can't happen. I would just draw the conclusion you did, that the med somehow affected your response to alcohol. I think it would be almost impossible to explain this since everyone has different reactions to meds, and also different reactions to alcohol. The effect you had was your own reaction, and it does sound quite unusual if I might say so.

Myself I never had sedation from SSRIs. For me they are activating. My alcohol tolerance has always been about the same.

I personally don't think drinking is a big deal on them. I mixed alcohol with many much harder drugs in the past. I drank for about a year on Effexor before I gave up drinking and drugging.

For me the biggest factor with alcohols effects was my mood. If I felt really good and confident I could drink all night and not get drunk. If I was insecure I would get sloppy drunk on very little.

This is pretty interesting. I am on Wellbutrin ( actually raising my dose starting tomorrow) and I have been on a few other AD meds, and honestly I usually drank on them. Welbutrin, on the label says you should not, but I usually don't got past 7ish shots. And if anything it somewhat adds to the effect.

I think I read somewhere that one reason it is not recommended to drink on AD meds is because it could have an effect of hitting you all at once, once you have had a few too many.

Either way, be safe and take care!

In a pharmacological sense alcohol is a depressant.

Mixing two drugs (a depressant like alcohol and an AD) with opposing effects is not likely to be a good plan.

I usually have one glass or wine or one cosmo if I am out at happy hour. I don't have ANYTHING if I am driving because I am not sure how steady I would be with drugs and meds. I rarely drink at home, but then my mom was an alcoholic.
I take a LOT of meds, so for you, an occasional drink is fine.
Don't do the binge drinking in college...nothing good ever happens when you are drunk out of your mind.
