I hope it's okay to post about this topic. I have traditionally had what I would consider to be a normal sex drive/response but over the past few months it has dwindled considerably. The only thing that's different is the introduction of Effexor. Has anyone else on Effexor experienced an effect on their sex drive that they think may be due to the Effexor? If you went off the Effexor did your sex drive return?

Hi

I totally lost all sex drive...I used to have a very high one but the meds soon killed that off! because the effexor worked so well, I decided to sacrifice that side of my life.....

I am sure it would come back if you stopped the meds but I wouldn't recommend doing so until you have spoken to prescriber about it. Maybe look at what other options you have?

Thanks allme. I think the next time I see my pdoc I will tell him about the sex drive/response problem and see what he thinks about switching antidepressants. Maybe not the best time though considering I'm still struggling with depression . . . It's just weird being basically frigid, and I feel bad for my husband who has a non-responsive wife.

Yeah, Effexor can kill your sex drive. It can also cause anorgasmia and other sexual dysfunctions, but it works awesome for depression.

My doctor put me on Viibryd and all sexual side effects went away. Plus for me it works better than the Effexor for my depression so that might be something you might ask about with your doc.

Effexor was the worst one for me. As a guy it didn't bother me much because having a more difficult time with orgasm can be a good thing.

With Fetzima I have not had the normal SSRI SSNRI sexual effects. I am kind of amazed by this as it is an SSNRI. I am really liking Fetzima

Sex drive? What's a sex drive? Hello Effexor, good bye sex drive. It works darn well as an antidepressant for me, so I'm living with it, and I don't have a partner, so it really doesn't matter.

Yea I've experienced the same thing. Even worse than Effexor (which was a bad med for me anyway) is what clozapine does. But those are normal side effects.

I've been taking it for about 7-8 months now. I definitely had a decrease in sex drive at the beginning; it sort of balanced out after a while, even after increasing the dosage, but it still wasn't back at where it used to be. I'm now taking Wellbutrin along with the venlafaxine and I have found that that has increased my sex drive to more than it was to begin, if not even more than I want!

I didn't really elaborate but switching to Fetzima I just assumed I would have the sexual side effects. At this point the long term sexual side effects had gotten bad. It took about four months on Fetzima but to my surprise I returned to normal. So for me Fetzima doesn't cause them and they are reversible which was a huge relief. If you respond well to SSNRI's then you may want to look at Fetzima, a new SSNRI.

I was on effexor for a long long time. So long that when I was eventually off it ... a very slow weaning process ... I was amazed by the difference in my ability to orgasm. I had forgotten what it was like and that it wasn't normal for it take such hard work to eventually get there ... if at all .
For me this side effect never went away and tbh it just didn't suit me all round.
Very happy to be back to normal.
