Hi everybody! I've been recently diagnosed with Bipolar/Adult ADD and so on Valentines Day of this year my pdoc put me on 25mg of Lamictol which I took everyday for about 2 weeks. On my 2nd visit with my pdoc, he put on 20mg of Adderall.
Well, right before I started the Adderall I had a major manic depressive episode. I felt psychotic and started hurting myself and screaming and convulsing on my bedroom floor. I scared my husband half to death. This same type of episode has happed 4 more times after that day. It seemed to occur every other Sunday night, but after stopping the Lamictol and upgrading my Adderall to 30mg, the episodes got worse and closer together. The last one I had was April 1st, which was the worst one, and my husband called my First Sergeant here at my base and they both drove me to the hospital.
I ended up being forced into the psych ward for a night and a day. The doctors immediatly weaned me off the Adderall too and now I'm not on any meds this whole week. I've been feeling really awesome lately! Are these psychotic episodes likely side affects from the Adderall? Can anyone help me with this? I don't see my regular pdoc till the 27th.

Hi Kalliope

So sorry to hear that you went through this. Maybe you had a severe allergic reaction to taking both meds at the same time. The convulsing sounds pretty scarey indeed! I hope yu get something sorted out very soon!

take care

I was diagnosed with bipolar over 20 yrs. ago. and I have depression also. The thing my Pdoc has always told me, is that any and all antidepressants can cause a bipolar to have a manic episode. (the ssri ones) That would absolutely be true for Adderal. Adderal, being an amphedimine, could just send a bipolar through the ceiling. I don't understand the seizures though. You should NOT be off of your meds altogether. You should call your pdoc and tell them what happened. Always keep your pdoc updated on your illness. Take care.

That was a low dose of Lamictal you were on, Maybe it was the combo of the drugs together. I take Lamictal (300mg) & Concerta (72 mg) as well as Abilify & other drugs to combat anxiety, etc. I've been on this combo for about 6 years. So sorry about your reaction. That sounds really scary. I hope your husband got you to the ER quickly.--Suzy
