Good song by Nirvana...NO actually a very good med. Lithium is a naturally occuring salt that has mood stabilizing, anti-depressant effects, and the only drug proven to reduce suicidal thinking. It has also been shown to stimulate certain chemicals in the brain that help regrow brain matter. It can be dangerous, and needs close monitoring by a medical psychologist or a psychiatrist (maybe psych NP), but not just your PCP. The most important things to monitor are 1) the level of the drug in your blood, 2) your kidney function, and 3) your thyroid function.

I added the bold to your quote above to highlight my question. How does a med "reduce suicidal thinking" other than lifting the depression?

I was perscribed lithium for that purpose but was not stable enough to continue with it. I currently take 200 mgs clozaril for the same reason.

Thank you

Ibuprofen competes heavily for binding to protein plasma in the blood. If someone is on LiCo3 and takes ibuprofen it kicks the lithium off the plasma protein quickly and rapidly increases the free lithium in your system which can be dangerous. You can take it regularly under the supervision of a doc as your system will upregulate plasma protein in order to accomodate both over time.
