A few years ago I was prescribed Celexa. I thought it worked fine but come to find out my BCBS would not cover the stuff. @ $120 a month I could not afford the drug. Now it seems there is a generic for it. I have a 30 day supply prescribed for me from the doc from hades to "see how it goes".

What I wonder is this....now that I'm off SSRI's for the first time in 14 years. If I take this stuff for a month and decide it is no help to me will I go through the god awful withdrawals I did with Effexor?

I am so afraid of SSRI's now after that withdrawal I went through. I cannot imagine that any drug could be any worse to cold turkey off as Effexor. I have never been so sick, not even with a terrible flu.

What do you think? Give it a try? Am I playing with fire?

pescador, when you used to take Celexa, did you get bad withdrawal symptoms when you quit taking it? That might be a better indicator for you on whether you would experience Celexal withdrawal this time rather than comparing Celexa to Effexor. You know, apples to apples... Good luck.

When I went off celexa I had side effects like hypertension and generally felt like crap...I had been on it over a year in a combo of other AD's and mood stabilizers.
Not fun......I had to go back on mood stabilizers but stopped AD'S altogether.....if you feel too bad too long Id go to gp.
Wishing you the best.

The generic celexa is actually one of those 4 dollar prescriptions at Walmart, Target, CVS, etc.

It was the first one I tried but I had a TON of physical side effects and it was unbearable, so I was switched to Effexor after two weeks anyway, so I'm not helpful with the getting off it, sorry.
