I have been on citalopram 20mg for almost 6 yrs with Bupropion 300. I know SSRIs don't last me a long time (2-3 yrs at the most), but I have been relatively okay on this one for almost 6 yrs. For the last 6 mos or so I have felt myself sinking and now and I start crying randomly and can't stop. It's affecting my job performance. I am clearly depressed at home and my children are most likely affected. I think it's time for a new med.

I have been on on many different medications over the years (by years I mean decades) and can't even think of another drug that I could try. I have suffered from depression all of my life and medications lift me out of a hole for a period of time, but I always have my legs dangling in the hole. I have never been free or wandered far from that hole. Right now I am about neck deep again.

Can anyone suggest good meds for depression so I might make a suggestion to my doc before I am tried on 1000 diff medications to find the right one?

Thanks-

I'm NOT a psychiatrist, but based on your post I would recommend trying an atypical anti-psychotic such as Seroquel for the depression. Furthermore, I would add a mood stabilizer such as Lamictal.

Keep us updated.

Hi

I too have the same problems with meds where they will work for a period of time and then things get really bad again and a med change is needed.

Iv'e been on most meds but a few months ago my pdoc tried me on a really old AD, anafranil I think it's called. This med has been one of the best for me so far and I wish I had been tried on it sooner but due to it being an older med if one was to o/d on it it could be fatal and due to my o/d'ing in the past no one has trusted me enough to try it..

Unfortunately there are so many meds out there and what helps one may not help another.

Maybe it might be an idea to write down the helpful med you have been on in the past if you can remember them and note which group of meds they are from... maybe trying a different med from a group that has been helpful will be good for you? or if there is a group you have never tried then that may be an option too?

Talk to your prescribing dr though and see how you go. Good luck and hang in there

Latuda seems to be a really helpful med with very few side-effects.

Have you ever tried MAOIs? I can relate to the never totally lifting out of it thing, and the one time I've ever been close to free of depression was on Nardil. I had to quit mainly due to huge weight gain, but if that wouldn't be too much of an issue for you it could be an option. There's also Parnate, which didn't work well for me but then again I didn't do well on bupropion either. If you need that sort of stimulation, Parnate could be great. And then EMSAM would be the other main MAOI option, too.

I'm always hesitant to say, "Oh, you should try ________." Different meds work for different people, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

SSRIs are great, but for me they only work for a little while. I'm in the middle of shuffling things around and getting on a couple of different medications. The latest addition is Provigil, and it's too early to tell if it's going to help. I'm also on Prozac, and my pdoc thinks it may not be working for me, so we've added Ability into the mix. I haven't picked that up from the pharmacy yet.

I hope you're able to find something that helps. Best of luck to you.
