How do you deal with the acne caused by lithium? I never had to deal with acne in my life-aside from the occasional blemish every now and then. I was on Lithium years ago and it caused me acne. I was off it for a number of years and it disappeared. I've been back on it for quite some time now and it's back. All over my chin primarily; little dots of acne, there must be 60 or more little I don't know what you call them- they are not pimples, yet. But are clearly acne

I've tried the proactive system, both regular and extra strength, used hen for months and months, but it barely helps more than Noxema with salicylic acid Daily Scrub and plain astringent.

Anything other lithium users find helpful?

I take a pretty hefty dosage of lithium and have not had any issues with acne.

I had the same problem ... What worked ? Nothing to be honest. I just gently cleaned that area, Medications and scrubbing seemed to make mine worse. Have you talked to your Pdoc about the obvious side effect?

I haven't brought it up to my current psychiatrist. The first time I was on it- my psychiatrist is the one that said "ooh, lithium acne" in a bemoaning tone. And we changed nothing. If I know my current psychiatrist , he would likely say "what is the trade off?" And obviously acne is not as terrrible as being without a mood stabilizer. I can't take my Depakote anymore because I am undergoing ECT treatments every few weeks and it would inhibit a seizure. Same goes for a lot of other mood stabilizers. And most I've tried and cannot tolerate any way.
Heavy sigh.

Thanks for your input.

My acne was really bad on lithium. I remember one time it was so bad and these jerk kids were staring at my face and I was miserable because my face hurt. I had a regular doctors appointment that day, and the second the doctor walked in she commented about my face and prescribed some stuff.

I don't have that problem because I had to get off lithium because of abnormal blood work.

Lithium also made my hair extremely thin and greasy.

That sucks to hear you had such a bad experience with it. Glad you were able to come off it, hopefully you have something that works as well or better for your moods.

Wondering how I could convince my doc to get me off it

I original took 1800mg of lithium and it totally broke me out and it was depressing. Now it's lowered to 750 and it went away(well most of it did) so maybe you could try lowering your dose and see if that helps.
Best wishes!

I'm actually only on 600mg right now because any more and I feel so so druggy But it is barely putting my blood level at a therapeutic level so I am wondering if it is even doing anything other than giving me side effects.

Last blood drAw my level was 0.4 and my acne is worse than ever. A few months ago it was 0.5 and a few months before that it was 0.6. All while on 600 mg. So my blood level is decreasing it seems and my SEs just increasing. The acne, the druggy feeling I get after I have breakfast every morning- all are increasing. Ugh

Dermatologist said that it can be a direct cause. He put me on Accutane for it and then a Vitamin A cream.

Despite Accutane and the possible mood effects, he simply said to tell the pdoc, "your medication causes acne."
