My husband has schizoaffective disorder bipolar type.
He is on the following meds: abilify maintena injection every 3 weeks thorazine 200 mg twice a day Cogentin Inderal Depakote (idk mg but it's a lot) My husband has always had a poor memory but since he started taking thorazine, he can't remember anything. He will start driving somewhere and completely forget where he is going. He will start a conversation and have to stop because he can't remember. He will tell me something 3 times in a day as if it is a new story. It has helped a BIT with the audible hallucinations but he is still experiencing them (he does on any medication he is on). Zyprexa was the best one for hallucinations but he gained 30 pounds in a MONTH and was a bit zombie like. He has tried oral abilify, haldol, zyprexa, thorazine....and I think another. I hate having to experiment with meds. This sucks. UGH |

It sure does. I know for a fact that meds have affected my memory, too, at times. Does his doctor know about his memory problems? Maybe something can help.

Thorazine was terrible for me. It was like it are my brain. I couldn't remember anything. Start talking and forget what I was saying mid sentence.
I hope your husband improves. The med go round sucks.

Been through a similar list to get rid of auditory hallucinations. Thorazine knocked me out for hours and when I switched doctors while on it (I moved) the new doctor immediately took me off it. Latuda works for me but I put on around 100lbs, literally, so it has serious down sides. I generally don't get that zombie feel though so I like that about it.
I have been on all the first generation antipsychotics you mentioned because I was in county care for a while and they always prescribed the cheapest meds possible. Has he tried many of the newer atypical antipsychotics? They have the weight gain and can sedate but generally don't dull you out to the world so much. Is there a reason his doctor is prescribing the first generation meds? It is just very unusual with private doctors. |

Didn't even know thorazine was still used. Where I live you cannot get it prescribed, it is seen as way too old and bad. It was the very first psychiatric med invented. Sure there must be something better???

hi. thorazine can definintely contribute to memory problems. maybe a higher potency older drug, like perphenazine? it doesn't cause as much weight gain as zyprexa, and its not as sedating and mind-numbing as thorazine.
btw...weight gain from zyprexa can be prevented w/ metformin. |
