Is this legal nationwide? I have a friend who lives rural and has poor access to transportation, who frequently has disruptions in the availability of meds as a result. They are not on Medicaid and insurance can be dodgy, so some are paid out of pocket or with high copays at times. Is there a solution by which they can get meds by mail, even if payment situations may occasionally change? Removing the transportation barrier would be a huge help.

It's up to your pharmacy and your insurance and your prescriber. Most pharmacies and insurance companies prefer to mail out prescriptions and consequently charge less for them. They also like to send them in three month supplies. I don't think there are any regulations against it; though it may not be possible for scheduled drugs like sleeping pills. My former psychiatrist had no problem with that and Walgreens charged me less and Coventry insurance covered more of the cost. For some reason my new psychiatrist won't prescribe in 3-month increments but I don't know why.

I wonder how I can help them figure out how to get this done, if there's anything they need to do perhaps besides ask her doctors for help? Insurance is through the parents who are not helpful. They keep threatening to kick my friend off so however to least rock the boat would be best if that's possible :/

When I get my prescriptions filled or refilled by Walgreens online they give me an option of having them sent by mail. You shouldn't have to deal with the insurance yourself--they'll let Walgreens know if they object. Probably they could let Walgreens deal with the doctors too if it became necessary. I'd just try clicking mail on the website and see what happens. (I'm assuming any other large drug chain works the same.)

I get all my meds via mail from WalMart. The only problem is that they can only be filled two days before the due date...and if they're delayed in the mail you run out.

Many insurance companies offer meds through mail now. It’s getting bigger and Walgreens is talking about partnering up with fed ex to deliver meds soon. I just signed up with a site that sends you birth control and it comes on time each month.
