Does anyone know what the "standard" dose of Ativan is for most people? Doc prescribed 1 mg for me and the pills look awfully small to have any effect.

1 mg of Ativan packs a punch, I was on 1-2 mg every 4 hrs as needed for anxiety.

But I got hooked on them, and started abusing them, and now am on clonazapam instead,

Between .5 and 1.0 are generally accepted doses for lorazepam. Don't let the size of the pill fool you...it is very potent. Lorazepam can be highly addictive if used improperly...so please make sure to dose following your doctors orders.

My script is for .5 but states I can take one to two pills up to 3 times per day as needed.

I take just the 1 mg once a day at bed time. I have had trouble falling asleep/staying asleep for about three weeks now, so the doctor thought the Ativan would take the edge off my anxiety enough to let me sleep. Maybe it's because I take it right before I turn out the light, but I haven't noticed much of an effect, although I do seem to be sleeping through the night.

I don't know if there is a 'standard' dose. It varies by patient and situation. I have been on everything from 2mg up to 7mg daily. The pills are quite small but that has nothing to do with how potent they are.

I take 2mg at bed time to help sleep, sometimes they work good other nights not at all, I am not sure if all my other meds and my mood have any thing to do with it.

Don't be fooled by the size, I'm a horder, and I'd take a half of a 1mg pill to deal with crowds.

My doc said to take half a pill if I find that the 1 mg dose is too much. Since I have been taking it at bedtime and thus don't really know how much it was affecting me, I decided to take half a pill before going on a 45-minute dog walk on Monday night. I always go to bed after the dog walk, so I wasn't worried that the Ativan would cause a problem with any activities. Well, after the dog walk, I felt absolutely nothing, so before going to bed, I took the other half of the pill. Then last night, I decided to take a whole pill before going on the dog walk. Again, after the 45-minute dog walk, I felt nothing, although once I got into bed, I tried reading something while sitting up but felt compelled to lie down. I kept reading, but I felt that I had to lie down to do it. I fell asleep quickly after turning out the lights.

So, the bottom line is I don't know whether I should continue taking the Ativan or discontinue it because it doesn't seem to work for me. I take enough other medicine already and don't want to add another if it's not going to help.

Hi there,

The size of the pill has strictly to do with the manufacturer of that pill. Any pill for that matter.

I switched back to Ativan, I liked Librium better cuz it helped my GI issues....

All the best

Instead of discontinuing the Ativan I think you should see your dr and try putting the dose up , perhaps to 2mg. It soundsl ike it is definitely having an effect since you are going to sleep easier and sleeping better at night. Consult with your doc and see what he/she says. Good luck.
