My sister has just recently been prescribed seroquel - she's been taking it for about 3 weeks now. I know that its an antipsychotic and should help the hallucinations and her hearing things go away. except its not yet. they have even increased the dosage and prescribed another antipsychotic - risperdal. How long does it take? or will this be something that she will have to live with? is it that it will just decrease the hallucinations?

First Seroquel is given for many reason now days from sleep to drug withdraw that have nothing to do with mental illness in 25mg to 100mg dos. .I take it for my bipolar to control the times when im manic and finding the right dos. was hard ive been on between 100mg. to 800mg . right now I take 200mg. with 200mg. as needed. Now as far as i know most people like your sister take 600mg. to 800mg sometimes higher .I have friends that told me that it works for them but it wont get rid of the voice but just lessen them so they can live a normal life .My own opinion is I love Sq. it just took time to find the right dos.My doc. use to tell me this all the hated hearing it but its true .THERE ARE NO MAGIC PILLS . I wish there was! But it takes time & a lot of hard work to live with a mental illness.

Good luck with your sister question about seroquel

I have schizophrenia, and Seroquel didn't help me at all.
But I tried Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and my symptoms diminished in about a week!!!

My pdoc put me on Seroquel about 3 years ago when I had a really bad breakdown. Both he and my GP really praised that med and, as with any psych med, some people will do great on it and others won't.

I fell into the latter category. I was on a very small dosage and took it at night to also help with sleep. I had the most horrific nightmares I've ever had in my life; it took almost the entire next day to wake up...I just stumbled around in a daze; and it was the first time I ever in my life had some mild hallucinations (saw cobwebs on the ceiling and around my lamp after I turned off the light).

But again....other people do very well on it.
