My small bouts with depression lateley have gotten worse. My doctor upped my dosage of Celexa from 60 mg to 80mg. Isn't this a HIGH dose? Has anyone had a high dose of celexa like this? If it wasn't working at 60, why would it work at 80?

Thanks in advance.

Recommended dosage

ADULTS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recommended starting dose of Celexa tablets or oral solution is 20 milligrams once a day. Dosage is usually increased to 40 milligrams once daily after at least a week has passed. Do not exceed 40 milligrams a day.
For older adults and those who have liver problems, the recommended dose is 20 milligrams once a day.

Does your doctor know something the drug company doesn't?

I have never heard of that high of a dose for Celexa. When I was on Celexa they raised it to 60mg and even then they said that was higher than the normal dosage. The Doc told me anything higher than 60mg will make no difference.

Sunshine's right.

With most medications the higher the dosage doesn't mean the higher the benefits. I've learned that from dealing with my husband's neuropathy. Some lower mg. are the same as if he were on the same med at a high dosage. No more benefits will come from it past a certain point. Not sure about Celexa but I know some meds are that way.

Hope everything works out for you.

Take Care.

NN - SSRI doses do plateau at a certain point, but that plateau is different for different people. A dose of 80mg of Celexa is rather high, but maybe give it a week or two. If you don't notice a difference then, ask your doc if he/she thinks a slow lowering of dose may be of some benefit. Sometimes lowering an SSRI dose after the drug has "pooped-out" the drug starts working again. If your doctor thinks that this method may be worth a try, you could decrease your dose (over a period of a couple months) back down to 40mg or 50mg.

Make sure that you consult with your doctor on this, as he/she should monitor your progress. It is near impossible for one to monitor oneself objectively; you need someone with experience to oversee your lowering of dose.

I hpe that this is of some help. - Cam
