Hi everyone!

Here's a little background. I took Zoloft during my pregnancy with my first child. I continued taking it during his first year while I nursed him. Everything was fine (and seems to be fine), but the Zoloft didn't seem to work well enough on its own for me.

So, my GP switched me to Lexapro. I'm taking that now (20 mg/day) and I started seeing a new pdoc. She added Wellbutrin XL (150 mg/day) and so far I'm noticing a nice improvement.

Here's my question. My husband and I are thinking about trying to have another child. My pdoc said that there is not much information out there yet about Wellbutrin and pregnancy. I don't remember if she said the same thing about Lexapro. She recommended that we try this combination for about three months (before trying to get pregnant) and then decide what to do. She also asked that I talk to my OB/GYN about it, which I will do.

I made a quick attempt at researching this myself online, but I ran into a lot of websites that are selling the meds instead of providing any real information.

Are any of you aware of the effects of Lexapro or Wellbutrin on pregnancy/nursing? Or do you know of specific websites that would help me find this information?

I also plan to speak with my OB/GYN before I make any decisions. I'm just getting started with all of this.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,
Laurie

Glaxo maintains a Bupropion Pregnancy Registry. Interested health care providers can obtain reports by contacting the Registry. See: http://pregnancyregistry.gsk.com/bupropion.html

The risk of Lexapro with respect to birth complications is similar to that seen with other SSRIs. There is nothing more worrisome than e.g. giving birth while exposed to Zoloft, in any case.

Multi-drug exposure, SSRI plus something, has not been shown to increase the risks during pregnancy.

I hope this is sufficient, but I could give references if you need them.

Hi! My daughter is taking Celexa while nursing. Her daughter was born three months early and she became pretty depressed with all that took place after Stella's birth. So, the powers that be, all of them, consulted and decided to put her on the Celexa. We have a resident pharmacist here, Cam, that will probably be able to answer your questions. He's very up to date on meds. Good luck, Pat

Hi, Lar! Thanks for the information! Should I talk to my OB/GYN about getting the reports from the Registry?

Sigh...seems the Lexapro and Wellbutrin have only been tested on pregnant rats. And from what I've read, I think I'd be a little nervous about using the Lexapro while breastfeeding. Maybe I'll switch back to Zoloft and take it with the Wellbutrin. Sorry to ramble. Just thinking out loud, I guess.

Thanks again for the information. (Nice to see you around here too Lexapro/Wellbutrin XL and pregnancy?.)

Contratulations, Grandma! (Sorry if I'm terribly late with that Lexapro/Wellbutrin XL and pregnancy?.)

I'll keep Celexa in mind when I'm talking to my doctors. At this point, I wonder if I'm going to switch ADs, I might just go back to Zoloft until after I would be done nursing. Since I have had about the same reaction to the Lexapro as I did to the Zoloft, I'm assuming it's the addition of the Wellbutrin that's helping.

Might all be a moot point if I have the same trouble getting pregnant again. Between the rollercoaster ride of the infertility treatments and the hormones they shove into me, I'm guessing I'll be a mess anyway.

Ugh...rambling again. Didn't I just apologize to poor Lar for this? Sorry to you too.

I appreciate you telling me about Cam. I never read the intros to the boards. Is that wrong? Lexapro/Wellbutrin XL and pregnancy?

No, you silly goose, it's not wrong. Cam has just been on here quite awhile, helping out and is kinda the site guru....he's helped me twice....
Colleen is doing very well with the breast-feeding and the doctor does test she and Stella occasionally. That little Stella only weighed a pound and a half when she was born. She is now at 14+, pulling herself up, will be walking soon....I'm so proud of her and her parents! They really shouldered up when she was born. Lived in the Ronald Mc house for four months, 115 miles from home.....it was hard on all of us, but them especially. Anyway, you think fertile thoughts and I've got your back!! xoxoxo pat
