I regularly take celexa and seroquel, and since I've been having health issues, where my main 'symptom' is coughing, I also take codeine (good thing you can get codeine #1 here OTC) to help stop coughing. With all these meds, I thought I'd be in snooze city, but no. Infact, i have trouble sleeping through the night and during the day - my stuffy head makes me tired, not meds. My question is....

Is it possible to develop a tolerance to these meds?

I don't want to go back to the doctors because all they'll do is say - sorry, can't help, or start me back on steroids, which is what I don't want.

Hi SS, my experience with the drugs was always that their effects or my tolerances would always change over time. But since you have a cold or something right now, I wouldn't get over invested in determining your overall relationship to the other meds. Wait til you're over the cough at least. eh? Get some chicken soup in ya. take care.

Sorry to everyone for not answering this more promptly, but SS and I talked about this in chat. I recommended trying a detromethorphan (DM) syrup rather than using the over-the-counter (OTC) acetaminophen-codeine-caffeine combination, as there is only 8 mg of codeine in each tablet. To get a reasonable antitussive (anti-cough) codeine dose, one has to take too many tablets, resulting in the ingestion of more acetaminophen than should be taken on a regular basis. - Cam

I used to be able to get codeine cough syrup by asking at the pharmacy counter. I found it more efficacious that dextromethorphan for a croupy cough.

Using tylenol 1's to get codeine is really hard on the liver, as you say. Too much tylenol relative to the dose of codeine.

Hey sqrlb8, thanks for the advice. Normally, that's what i'd do, but unfortunately, I've been sick since August (with the exception of 2-3 weeks of relief). I'm still coughing. In fact, a hacking cough woke me up from a good sleep way too early in the morning. I now have a sore throat too.

Chicken soup is great - warm and yummy.

Hmmm. Ya wouldn't be a 'canuck' would ya? eh?

Thanks Cam. I'm going to take up your suggestion and try the DM. Is there a point when it's useless to keep drinking the stuff?

I'm also wondering if I'm taking too many kinds of meds.... sigh

I gotta agree with you and Cam about tylenol/codeine hard on liver. Too bad tylenol has quiet a few uses. I used to take advil, naproxen and stuff like that, but I ended up with ulcer, so I switched to tylenol. There's gotta be something that works. I'm gonna take extra doses of celexa and seroquel to keep myself from getting too down and out.

SS8282: Sorry about your coughing problem. To be sick since August is a very long time.

I had a very bad virus a couple of years ago --- ran a fever for six weeks, chills, nasty cough. When the bottle of DM ran out, it still hadn't helped me. My cough was unusually bad.

Finally I was Rxd codeine cough syrup. I thought that it would surely help, and I will be able to sleep at night. Standing at the pharmacy, waiting for them to fill the Rx, I had a terrible coughing fit, had to go outside, and coughed until I cracked a rib! LOL Well, it seems funny now. Didn't then. Oh....the codeine cough syrup worked.

Now...don't laugh too hard, because you know what can happen!

Adieu

there is a website where you can check potential drug interactions....it wont give you a complete list you'd have to check a PDR for that but here it is just in case you want it... since youre taking so many different things. (i cant take dextromethorphan because i also take zoloft and it could cause serotonin syndrome. dextromethorphan also can cause a bad reaction with MAOI's and can cause liver damage if taken with Serzone or Desyrel.... but you wont find that info at drug digest)

http://www.drugdigest.org

sorry i cant make this url link work. if anyone wants to reply with a linking url that would be great.

Thanks adieu. You are ok now, I hope???I do know what you mean about cracking a rib. I've also pulled a muscle too (around my chest). I guess if I have to look at this in a positive way, if I need to get to the front of the line, I can cough a lot and scare everyone away. Celexa, Seroquel, and codeine

Since I've already tried codeine, I'll try the DM.

LOCKS: Oh, wow. Is that digest ever a timesaver! I put all of my meds in the list & added one I was considering taking in addition, to augment my AD. Nary an interaction. Neat! Thank you.

Cool site.

Update. I saw my fam. doc. today cuz of my sore throat (3 days now). The inside of my nose is really red and swollen, so I have to take Flonase, and my throat is infected and have to take Biaxin and robitussen (with codeine). She also warned me to increase my asthma meds if I start to weeze or my coughing gets worse. Maybe it's so hard for me to get well partly because i have brittle asthma? sigh.

I'm sorry you're sick SS.

My husband takes Celexa and Seroquel both. Do you want me to ask him anything about what he experiences? I think he's doing ok with sleep but I'll ask.

Thanks ((((((((cms))))))))) but I don't want you to go through the trouble. I'm pretty complicated because of my physical health on top of my mental illness. I really appreciate your kind offer. Celexa, Seroquel, and codeine
