Anyone have the MMPI-2 testing done? I'm having two tests this week, the MMPI-2 on Wednesday and another one on Thursday, I forget the name of the 2nd one. I'm obsessing over it because I've read it's called the "lie test". I guess a part of me will think they will say I'm lying or making things up. I do know that isn't how it works, but I can't stop obsessing over it.
If you've taken these tests before, can you calm my fears and give me ideas on what to expect for the test and our session after? We'll be meeting the 25th to go over the results. ![]() |

Hi there,
The MMPI has lots of different scales. One of them is called the "Lie Scale" but really it's a scale to see if you're trying to please the person who's testing you by saying good things about yourself that aren't true. But it's not a lie detector test. it just has lots of different areas that will tell you different things about yourself, your strengths and weaknesses. It's actually pretty cool, and getting the results will be very helpful for you. I wonder what the other one is called. Is it the SCID by any chance? Just wondering. In your session after the tests, you'll talk about what came out of the tests, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and what you should probably work on in therapy. You'll probably come out with a plan for what to do next. Nothing to be nervous about. There are no right or wrong answers, just tell the truth as best you can and you'll be fine.

yes you can lie on the MMPI or any other test just like you can tell a lie to your parents or whoever you dont want to know the truth.
The MMPI is like taking the SAT's in school. its a paper with questions on it and a bunch of squares or circles for yes, no, never always and sometimes. you read the question and you color in your answer. Are you thinking about killing your self yes no sometimes or always. I can choose to color in any of those choices. I can color in the circle for no if I dont want them to know I sometimes think about suicide. it is true that the MMPI has a lie detector. those are questions that are validity questions where according to my psych classes are questions that are worded in a way that the answer is supposed to be a yes or no, but when people are trying to lie on the test these questions end up being marked always or never and they are never the same answer when same question is asked multiple times. |

The MMPI is a really long, tangled test, no way you can tell what is going on or "fake" it; it won't say you are lying or making things up in the way you mean, it's not about your exact life story.
It will ask you the "same" question but word it 3, 4, 5+ different ways (you will get bored and sick of the questions, it's so long and "easy" and it will make you feel like you're going in circles :-) What it calls lying isn't what you would think; it will ask you things like "I never tell a lie" (and I use to believe I never did so answered, "yes") but everyone tells a lie some time in their life so it's just figuring out what you really believe (I'm not "bad" for believing I never lied), it just tells about the type of thinking you have/do, how you approach the world; it's about your thinking, not what you think. But the questions are exact statements ("I loved my father" (I had trouble with that one because my father was still alive and it was in past tense! What am I supposed to do with that? LOL). But then later it might say, "My father was someone I truly loved" and it will be a long time later so you won't really remember how they asked it the last time and you might think of a different experience and answer "yes" to one and "no" to the other and that will mean something. So that's a couple of ways you would be "lying", if you answered a lot of certain questions in a mixed way (but no way can you figure out which ones, they're not obvious, the "I never lie" question wasn't really about lying! It's about how rigid or judgmental I am) or "yes" to questions that were "impossible" like never/always. They don't really tell you the results (they're very long and complicated too :-) it's like one of those standardized tests you take in school that gets sent away and you never hear anything about it because it's just the politicians doing their thing? You don't pass or fail or get a good versus bad grade. It doesn't "judge" you, just points out features. as if someone were describing you with brown hair and eyes, 5'2 inches tall, x weight, etc. but mental instead of physical. Nothing good/bad just "facts". "Tends to choose chocolate ice cream more often than vanilla" ![]()

The MMPI is really no big deal. Just long, repetitive, and boring. Don't worry about the whole "lie test" thing. They are just looking for patterns in your answers and consistency or possible inconsistency. It all tells them something that will translate into a report in the end. Be sure you tell them you want to see the report. That's the interesting part.

If it's the long form the test is around 500 questions. It will repeat the same questions burn worded differently. It is read by a scantron machine and can detect inconsistencies and false answers.
