I didn't reply to this thread the first time round because it's too hard for me to imagine myself as a T, even in jest. I just couldn't do it.

However, I am training to be a psychologist (not therapist, don't panic!) and this caught my eye-

On placement I hear myself doing and saying things and wonder where that came from, and realise it's my T's phrase or strategy. Being able to close sessions in a way that feels containing and like I'm not cutting people short; being curious about others' experiences and making them curious too; being able to validate wherever they are starting from. All things that T has skillfully done with me and I have taken on without fully realising.

If I were a T...I would have an in door and a back door for those leaving sessions - I hate the awkward waiting room moments! And of course, longer sessions... I hate being in the middle of something and hearing, "we're out of time for today" Uuggh!

I would introduce clients to my back-up T before I go on vacation so if they have an emergency they're not callling a complete stranger.
Thanks for this!

If I were a therapist....
I'd have an endless supply of the most soft and gentle tissues
I'd have several gorgeous, comfy chairs which a client can choose to sit in
I'd have a balcony with deck chairs for sessions on perfect spring or fall days.
I'd never say "Hmmmmm" or "Tell me about your mother"
All sessions would be the perfect length of time - just what you need for that day.
A client would experience only mild cases of transference , without guilt or shame, and I'd know exactly the right thing to say to understand who and what it was about....

Thanks for this!
