I think my cat is dying and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. I posted in the pets forum, but I don't know how busy that forum is, so I am posting here too, in case anyone would be willing to go read there.

To make it topical...my T's brother is a vet and I am SO tempted to call him and ask him to call his brother and ask what I should do, but I know that's so not what our therapists are for. When my other cat was having strokes last summer, I do know that he mentioned it to his brother, because at my next session, he told me what his brother said about cats. But I seriously doubt he made a special call on my behalf, you know? That's just not how our relationship works.

and I guess also on the topic of therapy....my dad died about 7 years ago. He was only 54. He died at home, but we knew he was dying, and he was under the care of hospice (he had cancer). His last few days kind of haunt me, and this is bringing that back a bit.

I am scared to call my vet, because I'm scared she'll want me to bring him in, and I would feel bad disturbing him. I think it might just be his time (he's 17) and he is terrified of the car/vet/etc. I don't want to make him suffer if there's nothing to be done.

Ack
Your cat must be giving you signs that you could convey to your vet.....yes, likely they will just tell you to bring your kitty in to be examined by the vet, but really there's no other way to know? I always go by my gut instinct, so, my advise would be to check with your gut......if it tells you there is something wrong, better to be safe than sorry.....it just may well be your beloved pets time to leave this place, but you'd probably want to do whatever you can to make that transition easier for both of you

Thanks you guys. It was really sad, but he was SO sick. My 10 y/o went with me (I think I already said that) and it was good for him to be there because it was "his" cat. He has aspergers and it think it was good for him to sort of see the process. He cried and I cried and the vet was amazing.

I talked to T. He was proud of me....I totally am SO SCARED of death and just blew it with my dad at the end I had to be brave and make the decision and pick up the cat and take him there and hold him and love him while it was done. And I did it.

T thought I was handling everything really well with my kids, and that was good to hear.

Also, he said he will come in 30 minutes early on Thursday so we can have a 90 minute session this week. He's never done that for me before, but I so appreciate that he is working with me to make the longer session possible. I just want to soak up his caring and have it be okay.

So. My head hurts, and I'm tired, but okay.

Thanks for this!

Hey Tree,
you did so well and I am so sorry for your loss, I know its very painful. You did the humane thing for your cat, you let him go peacefully without struggling on in pain and I think he would be greatful for that act of what is ultimately kindness in the end!

I am really glad you called your T for the moral support because it's am emotional time for you - completely understandably!

I am so glad he's giving you extra time on Thursday, he sounds like a lovely T who understands your needs and the importance of having support.
