Whenever I try to do anything that isn't fast paced or doesn't numb me out; for instance, eating and watching t.v. numbs me out...Whenever I try to do anything that takes remotely any amount of mental energy,
I struggle... I should be studying right now...but, I'm just staring into space...I have a job too...A job doesn't cause me to use up much of my mental energy though...so I can do that...it uses up a lot of my physical energy though... but, I don't know what a mental professional would call this but, I swear there's a definition for what I'm going through... I feel like there is a lot of emotional/mental energy that is overwhelming and instead of sitting in it and experiencing all of it; Its as if I am sitting it aside in some part of my head, so I can go on with my life and return to it when I'm better equipped to deal with it.... The problem is: I feel I am on like sensory/thought overload, where my feelings and thoughts are overflowing and I don't have anywhere to place all of the uncomfortable feelings anymore...as a result, I'm staring in space and can't figure out how to just function..Does anybody know of a mental health definiton for this? I study psychology for fun and swear, this sounds familiar to me... as hard as it is to explain in words.....many people experience this....

Avoidant? Distant?
I know what you mean. Stopping is hard. But it may not be as hard as you think. I agree, therapy is helpful for this. It requires you to "stop." Sending supportive thoughts...

idk. I have a hard time getting started with studying a lot. Sometimes breaking it down into incredibly small steps helps. Step 1- get out book. Step 2-find paper and pen. Step 3- take some notes. Step 4- read notes. Step 5- don't panic about how long it's taking. take deep breaths. it'll be better to do what you can now than not to. blah blah blah.
I hope you can talk to a therapist and figure out whatever deeper issues are distracting you. |

Hey,
I don't know if there is one specific defination for what you are going through. I think your coping mechanism has started to go into a burn out stage because it was not really ever working to begin with. Sometimes we think if we distract ourselves from something that it goes away but it doesn't usually, it just festers away inside, even unconsciously. Usually the more we avoid something, hoping it will just go away, it actually just makes us feel worse because it niggles at the back of our mind. Perhaps you need to try and write down all the issues that you have sat to one side and at least then it is there, on the paper and not so much in your head causing this current melt down for you. You can then take that list to therapy or begin looking at one issue at a time yourself- but it does sound like you would benefit from support. I know studying can be taxing, usually the thought of it is worse than the actual task itself. Perhaps set yourself simple goals in studying such as, I will read or work through 10 pages in 1 hour and write down the important notes - for example, that way you have set yourself simple and doable pieces of the task at hand, which always seem a bit more manageable. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
