I post because I'm new to this MI and T stuff
And because I won't talk to anyone irl about it And because usually I'm bargaining with myself about backing out -when I come up 50/50 someone on here can be the tie breaker I post because sometimes I just need to know I'm not the only one I post because I'll argue my best interest against someone else better than I will with myself |

At various times, I post because:
-I am having a really hard time with T, and badly need support. Noone in my life who I can go to for this, as most don't know I'm in therapy, and even those who do don't understand the intensity of it -The majority of posters are in the US and the forum is therefore active during the UK night, when I don't have access to other forms of crisis support - I want to talk about T (perhaps to feel connected to her, and the therapy process) and again I can't really do this in my real life - I want to offer support to people with similar struggles. I feel concern and care for people whose stories I follow and I want to reach out to them. I try to come here regularly and reply to others' threads even when I don't 'need' anything, as I am mindful about giving back and not just taking. - I enjoy being part of an online community, even though I feel very much on the edge of it. |

Some reasons I post,
-To understand therapy better. I think a lot of other people here understand therapy better than I do. That's why I started on PC I think. The personal aspect is better than reading books or non-interactive info. -To get courage to continue therapy; to believe what I'm talking about is real and worth talking about (aka, so everyone here tells me to talk to my t) -To get other people's ideas about what I'm thinking -To help others if I can, either by sympathizing and posting thanks and hugs, or by trying to explain another perspective in a way I hope could make sense to the other person -To understand other people who have different personalities and who are going through different issues -To be challenged in a sensitive way -Sometimes to see someone can accept me and sympathize in spite of whatever unpleasant personal characteristic I'm posting about -To see if Pachyderm thanks me for asking what a Klingon is -Because I'm lonely and have other work to do on the computer, so it's easy to post |

There were so many strange creatures in Star Trek; were Klingons special? What about Vulcans? They seemed attractive to me! Or at least half-Vulcans.

I post because sometimes I feel very alone with my thoughts and fears. When I am feeling strong, I post to help others who feel like I do sometimes.
Also, as I learn personalities I feel like I "know" some of the regular posters and can rely on their advice because they have great insight! Bluemountains |

I absolutely love reading the posts here on PC. I don't read all the sections and I admit to loving a few more than others (psychotherapy being one of my favorites), but I also admit to doing more reading than posting.
What do I "want" from posting: * clarity or understanding of the process * a sense of comradarie when it comes to the usual sufferings of going through psychotherapy. * trying to help others who are experiencing the same thing I did when I was in the intitial stages of therapy. |

Since every post I write is an exercise in overcoming self-criticism and being brave enough to put *anything* out, I don't really want anything from it. If I get a response or acknowledgement it's icing on the cake, so to speak.

I agree it's a control issue. I don't think anyone "owns" the threads they start. I think when someone starts a thread it is opening up a discussion for anyone's imput and whatever people add to the conversation is okay. I don't care if people "hijack" because i don't see it as hijacking at all. Threads evolve based on the posts within.

I a new here so, when I decided to sign up for this forum it was b/c of a couple of reasons. One reason is thearpy is new to me and I have some questions about it, another is that I like to find people who can understand what I am going through. I have a lot of people in my life who have empathy for my situation, but none KNOW what it is like.. and I need that.

lol, well this is true hijacking. I never see this degree of going off topic when most people get upset about someone hijacking their thread. Most times it's just the natural progression of a thread that goes off a little but is still basically related to the entire thread.

re hijacking - how can one complain about it, in a forum that was originally built on free associating? ie what word comes to mind... That's what always cracks me up. This site was born to wander.

oh but there's a lot of fragile egos that get attracted to this kind of forum, its those that cannot tolerate 'hijacking'

tbh, i sometimes get frustrated when I post thread and feel people don't get it.... but I have to realize nobody will get my existentialist thinking......... and after all my threads are not my babies to get overly upset about them. that's what tdkgirl's question was about, about forgetting the question - it really still is about the OP. It's become a jazz riff, and they're the band leader. It's a poem, and we take the road less traveled by. I never start threads, so I am totally indebted and so grateful to those who set us out on these incredible voyages. So my answer to the question posed by this post - i'm rowing as hard as I can? I

I start a thread when I have a topic, concern, or issue that I need/want to talk about or share. I feel that it helps me grow and see myself through the eyes of others. Many times what I originally post about myself, turns out to be something totally different from what I expected it to end up as. Does that make sense?
When I write, I may be thinking one thing, but others interpret it as something different. Sometimes this throws me off, but as the thread continues, I can see where many times they were right. I do have issues that I don't like to see in myself. It can sting sometimes when I read a response that is not what I wanted to hear, but truth is the only thing that will help me grow. I don't want to stay 'stuck', so I guess you could say that I post to find support from others who can help me get 'unstuck'. ![]() Do I post to get validation? Sometimes. Do I post to feel that someone out there is listening to me? Certainly. But the bottom line is that I post to 'get things out'. It helps me work through things in my own mind. It also helps for others to get in my mind with me and help me get out of it! Thanks to all of you who are helping me keep my sanity! ![]() |

I've found actually that most people don't seem to get upset if the thread goes off topic. But a few do. I know who some of those are and try to respect. Sometimes someone will mention it in their thread and try to bring the thread back to their original concern, so I desist if I'm part of the off topic discussion. But I think, as has been shown by the number of people responding in the affirmative here (good Spock talk), that quite a few are fine with their threads straying.
