I was looking up a type of therapy (bibliotherapy) and somehow ended up at a totally different article dealing with therapist disclosure and online searching which was interesting; and is something often mentioned in posts here. Link to the article is included if anyone is interested

Thank you. The article is strictly for the T, isn't it? The client's reasons for wanting to know information isn't dealt with. It made me feel guilty, not necessarily a bad way to feel about it.

I disagree with the article. It talks about different "Levels", and one of them is called "intrusive search", which includes finding out your T's address or phone number, or family tree, etc.
If you google your T, why would you click on a link to their professional website and then not click on a link about their family reunion? Yes, if you hire a private investigator to check your T's credit reports, that's creepy. But if you google their name, I don't think anything you find is "intrusive". The internet is public information. That's like wearing a low cut blouse and then getting pissed when people look at your boobs. Um, they're RIGHT THERE. |

There is nothing wrong with googling a therapist or any other professional or really anyone in general. The information is public. You are paying someone for a service that is lopsided and very personal. Wanting information on that person is not bad or odd or intrusive. It is a risk they assume when they decide they want to be a therapist for a living. Having them followed by a private detective, following them yourself, hanging out by their house, taking pictures of their children etc = to me all examples of going a bit far. But simply googling them on the internet is just not a big deal.
