Did anyone do the thing where you took the extra SATs in Junior High? Not the ones everyone took at school, but the geek ones where you went with the High School kids on a Saturday. I did it. Still don't really get the point of what it was though. lol
Thanks for this!

Yeah, I feel ya. They turned me down too My mom attending my interview with me and making a huge scene might now have been the most helpful thing to do.

Me too.. I spent a lot of my free time hanging out in the chorus or orchestra rooms in high school!

OMG! Yeah I did that too. Was funny. After the results came back they took a few of us to lunch at Howard Johnson's. Too funny!
It was cool though, I ended up getting to attend a summer program at at university a couple states away.

I played bass clarinet for a while. Why bass? Dunno. For some reason I wanted either that or the bassoon. Apparently my goal was to pick a big instrument case that would be totally annoying to take on the school bus. Should have just taken cello or tuba while I was at it.
Thanks for this!

My daughter did that. The point was that she qualified to take summer classes at Duke. Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP). She has gotten to take some really cool college level classes from seventh grade on.

Was it a Johns Hopkins thing? Dang, I can't remember now the exact name of the organization. All I know is I took the SAT and got some piece of paper saying I did a good job a few months later. But I kept getting stuff from the organization throughout high school, and they had various programs and I did a couple of them. It was kind of cool.

We had two bass clarinets in my high school band, and they were definitely the coolest chicks in it.

I was just a regular old clarinet and piano-when-needed. Quit after 3 years because our band was terrible and I hated playing outside every Thanksgiving.

I see. My parents wouldn't have let me go anywhere like that. Did they tell the kids directly or did they tell the parents? Either I'm not smart enough to have gone or my parents ripped me off. Not sure which one would be more irritating.

CTY, Center for Talented Youth! That's what it was.

pbutton, I'm pretty sure they just sent stuff in the mail, which meant that if your parents got to it first, they might not have given it to you if they weren't going to support your participating in other activities... which is pretty sh***y.
Thanks for this!

Sorry, in my case it was definitely the parents that were contacted. Probably the parents ripping you off I know that it cost money and I only went because my dad didn't give me a choice. If I had been living with my mom at teh time, there is no way it would have happened.
Thanks for this!

ok...here's an oxymoron: love band/hate math.
Reading music IS math.

This girl that was always better than I throughout grammar and high school got into MIT. I was BS. Big time. I just know it was the essay. I sucked at grammar (still do). I only took the SAT's in high school, I scored a 1575 (in 1983 perfect score was 1600). If I scored the coveted 1580 I would have gotten Striver points. Of course the other girl did the 1580 plus. Grrr. They don't do striver points anymore (something about racism)

Yeah, we were contacted as the parents. And the one my daughter goes to is wicked expensive, like more than three grand for a three to four week thing in the summer. But, she gets to take a summer course at Duke with college professors and live in a dorm and meet kids she has a bunch in common with, so we thought it was worth it. She says it has been the most valuable experience of her entire life and taught her so much more than just what she learned in the course.
Thanks for this!

Yep. I had to take care of my sister so that wouldn't have worked out for me.

Nice.

Yeah, I wasn't even allowed to spend the night at a friend's house except for a handful of times ever. (literally, only four or five times EVER allowed to spend the night at a friend's until I left for college and started sleeping wherever the **** I wanted ).
Thanks for this!

Well, if you believe that (about English) I got a nice bridge to sell you
Seriously, people. What is it with your language and the spelling and pronunciation? Huh? Huh? (ok, I know the answer to that one. But still. Huh?)

We weren't allowed to stay home, they made us find places to go on the weekends. I was very active in school and worked and played sports. I just slept at my house during the week.

Wow. I had a feeling we were all the geeks/nerds from high school. I know my people.

However, I was not a math nerd. One subject I didn't do well in without assistance. English, yes. French, yes. Science, yes. History, yes. Literature, yes.

Piano, honor society, yearbook editor, volleyball captain (yes, I was a jock too).

I loved school, someone else was watching my brother and I could relax a bit. I got bullied really badly all thru grammar school though. I would beg the teachers for a project so I wouldn't have to stand alone in the recess yard. HS was better though.

You know, I did so well academically and life was hell at home. We didn't sleep nights, it was a constant war zone. I wonder how that happened?

I did well in school too, i think it is because that is where i was praised by teachers. My parents liked my c average sisters better because they weren't trying to be better then anyone else. I too was in band french horn.
