The message the dissociation is giving is that something was overwhelming to you. It's a way to step away and get distance from something that is scary, or shameful, or angry....the emotions behind it will vary. But the key is it is your way of coping when things get to be too much. You and T will learn to identify those points and move more carefully around them so you can be present more often.
