Yes, I think this is relevant!

It's worse than paycheck to paycheck...it's starting to be creditors breathing down my neck.

There's another problem and it's really hard to admit. I've actually written the post 3 times already and deleted it, but this one is going to be the one (post #2 and #3 said the same thing).

H and I are having serious financial trouble. I went to put gas in my car this morning and a lady watched me put 3 cards into the pump and have them all decline. It upset me and the lady looked at me like I was nuts. Luckily, I had $20 cash on me, so only put $15 in. Hopefully that will get me to payday.

This is really stressing me out too. I had to tell T last week I couldn't pay her. She told me not to worry about it. I am debating cancelling my appointment tomorrow, but H is telling me I should go because of everything I've been through in the last week. I need to talk to T about the $. I can pay her Thursday if I can pay all the bills.

It's so embarrassing to me. I am used to having money.

Okay, I'm going to hit submit now.
((Chopin))

Is H not working? I've lost track.

Hi Lola! I'm going to disagree with you, but it's nothing personal.
And I'm speaking only for myself. Chopin may feel differently.

Feelings aren't always rational. Some people can shrug off financial reversals, others take it very hard. Subconsciously, your financial position could be a big part of your identity and self-worth. That's just the way it is.

If you are used to having money and all your friends have money, it can be quite traumatic to find that you can no longer keep up.

Being middle-class and short of money is a different kind of pain from real poverty, but it is pain all the same.

No, he's working, but they are cutting back on overtime...he tried to work at least one day of overtime a pay period. He had a pay cut 4 years ago and only had a 1% raise 2 years ago. I haven't had a raise in 5 years. We make roughly the same amount of money.

In the last year, our house payment went up due to escrow, I had lots of medical bills (between my kidney stone and neck and hand issues), I got a used car that got better gas mileage for my new job (in January), and H got a new truck in July (because his Explorer literally fell apart).

We've always done fine and had money left over. In the last month, it's starting to crumble.

I get that CE.... I grew up in poverty and my financial position / job is a huge part of my self worth. I have been all over the financial scale.

I still stand firm on its nothing you should be ashamed about, even if you are.

Chopin.
I think many people are in your situation. Prices keep going up, but incomes have not. I am sorry you are dealing with this.

You are right in that we shouldn't feel ashamed, but we do.

I grew up working class, going to a school with a lot of upper-middle class. Shame there.

When H and I got married, we had a little financial trouble in the beginning, but he worked a lot of overtime, and we did okay. When I was promoted to QP in 2007, I received a huge raise (think $6+ an hour). Then, we were flush until last year. Now we're having serious issues.

We're solidly middle-class. T described herself and me as lower middle-class, but I don't know what their income is and she doesn't know what mine is.

Where do you find the statistics on middle class , lower middle class etc.... I don't care what I'm labeled as long as I'm not broke for too long.

Maybe I should say you shouldn't be embarrassed here.

I don't really know...and it's probably different in different parts of the country. I live in a middle class neighborhood. H and I have cars and jobs. Until recently, we could do just about what we please. I always thought H and I made about the same or a little less than T and her H, so I was surprised to call herself lower middle class.

I'm doing pretty good now that I'm talking about it. It is nice to receive support from people from all levels of the social strata.

If you were really rich you wouldn't worry about being broke and if you were really poor you'd be broke all the time. So that makes you...

Maybe she just meant that she was born lower middle class?

She was born upper middle class...her dad was a high-rank officer in the Air Force...graduated from VMI. She was born in France. Once when I did an internet search (yeah, I know ) with her maiden name, she used to be mentioned with her parents, grandparents, and brother in the "society" section of the newspaper. Those don't seem to exist anymore, but they did in the 50's and 60's.
