To try something different I asked my T in an email if she believes in walk/talk therapy. I wrote her that I think it could be beneficial and I wanted to give it a try. She said we could do a walk/talk therapy session at my next appointment.
Anyone else have this experience in therapy and how is it different? I would love any input.

The thought is intriguing, but I feel like I would get distracted! Let us know how it goes!

My T and I did it once or twice in the first year of therapy. I liked it, but yes, I was kind of distracted. She walked too fast for me, and I was too aware that I was "walking with my T".

I have had sessions with T where we have gone for walks. She says it can help to relax and open up.. I'd agree with that. She often points out different plants and things and tries to get me to be more 'in the moment' - which she observes I am often not. Sessions that have involved walks have been lovely and I've found them helpful as an exercise, and also good for the therapeutic relationship.

I would love it if I knew that we wouldn't come into contact with anyone else. Unfortunately I do not think that is a possibility where I live.

I would love to go for a walk with my T, but i don't think she'd agree. Maybe thats for the best though, as i think it would cause interference with my transference issues.
She has a massive garden and i keep meaning to ask her if we can sit outside when it's sunny, but again i don't think she'd agree.

I posted in the other thread about this.
I've done it and it was extremely helpful for me as I had a lot of anxiety and couldn't focus my thoughts and discuss any particular issues. The walking helped relieve the energy of the anxiety and allowed me to relax and open up a bit more. I was not distracted at all. |

There are therapists here that advertise as doing walking therapy. The other one I see spoke about it. I think the movement would be good. I would totally do it if it were in a park or someplace where I was not going to be interrupted by crossing streets. I do talk better when moving.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes. I know it wouldn't be for me. I don't think I would safe outside the therapy room. It's weird how much you realize you feel safe when you think about a change! Good luck. Please let us know how it goes.

Well I had my T appointment today and we talked about walking at the next appointment a little bit and how that would work. The rest of my appointment was great and I'll write more about it in another thread when I have more time.

My T has been awesome about going outside if I ask, whether it is for a walk or just sitting on a bench in a park, and it has always been helpful for me. I like walking and talking, because it is often easier for me to talk if there is something distracting me enough to keep my walls down, and if I don't necessarily have to look directly at the person when I am speaking. I like being outside because it is more of a neutral space rather than "their" office, and that makes me feel a little more safe.
I think it's really great that you were able to ask your T about it, and I really hope it goes well for you!! Please let us know! |
