I know this is totally a case by case thing but I've been worrying lately about how long I will be in therapy. I've been in therapy for 4 years so far but I haven't made much progress in managing my BPD or resolving my childhood trauma. My new T is more action oriented so I hope we'll be able to make some progress. I'm starting to worry about the financial burden of therapy. My parents have been helping me out but I think money is getting tight for them now that they finalized their divorce and as my dad prepares to retire. I wonder if I can hope to be finished in a year or if that's too optimistic?

I guess it really varies depending on the reasons you are in therapy. I have been in therapy for almost 7 years now I have found it just helpful to have the 'mother figure' relationship in my life.

I've been in therapy for almost a year and a half. I've accomplished a lot and I'm still working on stuff.

I have been in therapy for 1 year and 3 months seeing her only 2 times a month but just about a month and a half ago I started seeing her weekly because we been doing trauma work , so I dont know, how long it takes, I dont even count the first year as a year because twice a month does not count much for me.

It does not sound like your issues are very easy or of short duration. I think it can take some time to deal with childhood issues we have been carrying with us and working off of for XX years? It took me 9 years therapy, twice, with 9 years in between to get to a place I was satisfied I did not want any more therapy. I was in my 50's.

I've been in therapy for 20 years and there's no end in sight. I'm bipolar with psychotic features and I rollercoaster like mad. I'm considered treatment-resistant.

Hope this info helps.

About a year and a half (twice a week since September) and my therapist says "we're really only just beginning." In a way, I am comforted that she is not kicking me out.

I say as long as you need it is as long as you need it.

I've gotten the impression that it might also depend on what kind of therapy you're in. If I've understood it correctly CBT is more of a short-term kind of therapy while people in psychodynamic therapy are often in therapy for longer periods of time. Am I right?

Anyway, I'm doing CBT and I've been in therapy for about three months now. As far as I can tell I've made no progress and I wouldn't be surprised if I need to be in therapy for years.

I'm a recluse. My therapist is almost the only person I'm comfortable talking to, so he stands in for my social interactions over the years.

Psych Central is really helping though. I've spent more time here in the last few days and it's making a difference. I'm at my computer, deep in my home. Safe.

I started therapy around '90. Still in it, though I've taken small brakes at times. I think the effort you make in therapy and helping yourself makes a big difference. Frankly, I now realize I may be in therapy for still quit some time, but it's taken me years to feel ready to put any effort into therapy. Frankly, it's been less than a year. Before, I felt too hopeless. Now, I want to improve and feel like I actually can get better. And that's made a lot of difference.

Good luck.

It would depend on your purpose to go, your therapist, and you.

I've been in therapy on and off for 15 yrs. current stint is 2.5 yrs. I'll be in therapy my whole life because I have serious mental illness that will require long term help from a psychologist.

On and off, since I was 9. Hmmmm....what is that, almost 30 years. Far from consecutive, but alas....that's some serious amount of years, since my first session, when I stop and think of it, like that.
No serious illness, lest you count my physical illness. Just a means to undo being a child of dysfunction.

On and off for thirty years, mainly depending on the financial situation at the time. I need to be in therapy now but can't afford it and my pdoc without any insurance. Each time I've gone it has been for different reasons all of which lead back to my Bipolar disorder. I've needed help with manic episodes and with depressive episodes.
