Twice I've had to call my therapist: once to see if it was OK to come in for walk-in hours the following morning because my dog killed my other dog and I was beside myself with guilt for accidentally having shut them in a room together. No return call one way or the other, so I just stayed drunk the next day and kept my appointment a few days later. I mentioned to her that I had called to try to come earlier, but she just let it pass, giving me no indication of whether she ever got a message or not.
The second time was last Friday (the 8th). I was heading out there a few hours early because we had ice storms and I didn't know how the roads would be. When I realized it was treacherous out there, I called to cancel and reschedule. They receptionist transferred me to her secretary, where I left a message because there was no answer. No call back. It makes me feel like I'm being blown off. I do realize that it's possible that her secretary might not be doing a very good job of getting messages to her but twice?
I'm tempted to try to reschedule again, but I feel like that's being creepy. Now I'm just at a loss. I had thought things were going well, but maybe that's part of some therapist trickery I don't understand? God, I hate this. I just want to get better. I was really committed to therapy but I'm losing my resolve over the feeling that they just want to be rid of me...

I had a T like that once...I saw her twice. I couldn't handle it. She was horrible about returning calls or getting appointments scheduled. I think it's totally unprofessional to do that. It's one thing to miss a call and forgetting to call back or something and then apologizing for it. But to not even acknowledge it? Not only is it unprofessional, it's just plain rude.

I'd try and speak to your T about it. It's obviously something that is bothering you and hindering the therapeutic alliance, so it's worth bringing up. Depending on the response you get that could help you decide whether this T is the right fit for you or not.

One thing to consider is that her receptionist might not be passing messages on, or at least not doing a very good job of it. I've called my Pdoc to arrange rescheduled appointments and scripts and at least 3 times he never called back because the reception staff forget to even bother to check whether he was at work and he was actually on a week's leave.

One of the biggest bar complaints is about attorneys who don't return phone calls, but therapists have convinced people that when they do it, it is because they are setting boundaries or have decided it is in the best interest of the client somehow. I would find another therapist.

I, too, think you should address it with your T. I suggest you ask her what her position is on out of session communication and what day and time is best to reach her.

I finally got the nerve to call and ask to reschedule and the front desk receptionist asked for my number to call me back when she personally got back there to my T's appointment book. So I think the problem was probably with my T's secretary, and since I'm going to be changing to someone in our new town, I just need this one visit to wrap things up and make sure my record so far gets transferred. It's the same company, different location. Hopefully with good secretaries

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, that is so sad - it sounds like a horrible accident, so I hope you are not still being hard on yourself. Soup

We do a lot of old/sick dog rescues, and go through a lot of deaths. This one actually went easier for me because every day he was suffering from terrible arthritis and congestive heart failure. The bite incapacitated his brain immediately and I held him while he died. I'm at peace with it. I miss him and remember him fondly when I come across his things
