Do you sit up, lay/lie down, sit on the floor, have a pillow or blanket?
I've been pretty formal in therapy. I think I want to bring a pillow so I can unravel the edges or somethin'.... |

I sit in the middle of the couch in a regular upright position usually with my ankle over my knee. The couch is not comfortable at all in itself. I do not use her pillows or touch anything else that would belong to the therapist. I do not believe in being informal or comfortable with the therapist.

Over the years as I've become more comfortable with my therapist, I have become more relaxed. I switch sitting positions, rest my head, but I never lie down. It seems too intimate, to me.

I sit "indian-style" on the couch. She has a ton of pillows that really bug me...but I don't fiddle with them because I don't want her to read anything into it
![]() My T, on the other hand, sits all sorts of ways: crosses legs, sits on legs, leans back, leans forward.

When I did therapy in person, I never did anything that seemed unusual to me: I sat in the provided chair or on the traditional couch. Only with one therapist did I really feel comfortable, and she had a tiny office, size of a respectable closet, so there wasn't a lot of room to improvise. With the others, I mostly felt locked in place and sat neatly on the chair, gaze locked on an object or looking at the therapist. That's how I remember it. I might on one couch hold a pillow in my lap almost as a shield, that was an intense and unproductive course, haha.
Today, I do therapy online and love how comfortable I can get. I turn on music if we're chatting and have a cup of my favorite tea. When I feel extra vulnerable, I can wrap a quilt around me. At times I've sat on the floor, in a bed, in a stairwell, or on my couches in my office or living room. One thing I can't do much is fidget with my hands as we're either typing or on the phone, but I can get up and pace, curl up, or, as I often do, just sit in my chair. I encourage you to do whatever it takes for you to feel most comfortable in therapy, makes the work that much easier. I know my first therapist, when I was a teenager, gave me a little stuffed bear, and holding on to something like that was definitely helpful at times. |

We both sit on the floor, I hate his chairs. I leave a blanket there, but I don't use it much; I like knowing something of mine is there when I'm not.

I walk in, put my things on the end table, take my shoes off and sit on the end of the couch with my legs curled up beside me. She has pillows on the couch, and I use one to lean on and one as a shield that goes up or down depending on the topic of conversation. (She's made me aware of this but I can't seem to 'catch' it until it's been done, lol).

I sit on the floor, leaning against the couch. T sits next to me and seems to use a lot of cushions.

I sit in a chair, I move positions a lot because his new chairs in his new officer are so stinking uncomfortable. In general I do think I get comfortable. Though, not as comfortable as he has offered. When T moved offices he got a new chair for himself, and it is the kind of chair that looks like he should be lounging with a beer! LOL.. anyways, it came with a foot stool that T wasn't using. So, the first time in his office he offered to let me use it!! I declined thinking it would be way too informal, not sure why though!!

wow! couches, blankets and such..? I sit in some regular waiting room chair.
Uncomfortable as hell. At least I have a window to look out from. My last T had a window with the shades pulled down. She says she don't want nobody looking out, for distraction. I'd rather be laying on those exam tables at the doctors office. If I layed down, the'd think I was was weird, as I am already anyways. Where you people going to? Sounds like a place that I want to go to. Will bring it up next time to my next appointment. Oh, so it goes... |

I change sitting positions a lot, but I always sit in the corner of the couch with my legs up. If I'm feeling really anxious I'll hide behind my knees. Noticed T copying me at that last session - he'll do that rather than point it out to me.

My therapist has a bunch of chairs in his office. Well. Three not counting his. Two are your typical like chairs you find in a waiting room (wooden, cushioned seats, wooden armrests) and they have a table in between. Then he keeps another fancy office chair.
I kind of do whatever I want. I've sat on his floor. In the waiting room type chairs. Recently I've taken to grabbing the office chair and rolling across his office like a kid before propping my feet up on the table. Which is cool because he props his feet up on his desk. |

I'm usually on the edge of my seat and nervously sweating. I also never move and try to make myself smaller.

I walk over to the couch, move all the pillows to the other end, if I forgot a toy to fidget with I look around the room to find something (T knows what I'm doing and may say "here, take these paper clips" or the like) to play with, then sit all the way to one end of couch. If I have on sandals I may take them off. So, yes, I guess fairly comfortable!

Sometimes there is a sign in the lobby announcing that the air conditioning is not working, so i will say to the guard at the front desk, "oh no not another naked session!" And we both laugh. So pretty comfortable. T and i will foot wrestle for the ottoman. We're both very jokey, but also very serious.

T got new chairs and we both agreed neither of us liked them but had no choice but to get on with them. They don't have arm rests and are like regular waiting room chairs, and I always have my bag on my lap like protection.
I complained about the placement of the chairs, that I was always looking at his blimmin white board( I hate when he writes stuff up, so now he very rarely does).......and he challenged me and said...well you could choose to sit where I do. I want to...but haven't got the courage up to do so yet! Either that or on his desk chair so I can swivel around while we talk. |

I sit up, lie down, sit on the floor, have a pillow and she covers me with a blanket. I feel blessed that she always heats up the room and encourages me to do anything (within reason) in the room. Sometimes she will stand behind my head and put both her hands on the temples on my forehead and leave them there in silence.
