My husband and I use Carmax and just traded in our old used car for a new used car and we ended up trying a couple $45,000-$60,000 cars to try and get one to fit my husband and be comfortable for his height and weight. These are used cars, too! For me, car price is a function of age -- kind of like how when I go into a Toys R Us these days to get a present I think, "You know, I could buy myself anything I wanted in here. . ." It feels good to be a grown up kid in a candy or toy store.

Is $50k expensive in the US? $50k over here would buy you a medium-size family car. Any car over $100k qualifies as luxury over here.

There's a Ford parked outside his house, I don't know for sure that it's his but my fantasy is that it is his and Ford's are reliable and trustworthy... if he had a convertible sports car parked outside, not sure what I would make of that... perhaps the erotic transference would intensify but perhaps he would become a bit less reliable in my mind.

All of this stuff... the car, the clothes they wear, the room they use, the notebooks & pens they use... it can all influence our feelings towards the relationship and it's useful to think about.

Does it really matter? My T drives a 18k car and I drive a 70k car. I still go to her for help and we don't talk about cars.

Strange, I thought part of being a therapist was that you drove a Subaru...

So like what kind of 50K car? It could mean a lot of things, depending on the car. What kind of car are we talking about here, like an Audi, or like a low end BMW, or like a classic car of some sort? I don't think it would bother me either way, but I like that my T drives a Subaru, it makes sense to me.

Curious question: How do you know what kind of car your T drives? I don't think I know what kind of car a single acquaintance of mine drives... I know my sister's car, but that's about it. (As a non-driver, it is not something I pay attention to, but it's definitely not something I have ever heard people discussing - it would be like discussing what kind of shoes somebody is wearing!) Does it come up in your therapy sessions, or do you see your T driving it?

Mine drives a Prius. We don't talk about it but I see it. They are very energy efficient. I don't know how expensive they are.

I can't imagine what it would be like to be able to afford payments on a $50K car, nevermind a $100K car. My Camry was $10K ($14K after all of the taxes, warranty, etc.), and the payments kill me after a $5,000 down payment.

My T drives a fully electric car. I drive a fully loaded Lexus. It doesn't really make a difference and we have never discussed vehicles.

Maybe cars are more of a focus here? I could tell you what kind of car each of my co-workers drives, and what kind of car all the co-workers at my last job drove.

Yesterday at work, the lady who owns the building came in and asked my boss which cars in the lot belonged to his employees. He easily picked each car out and knew whose it was. This was 15 different cars.

I have no idea what kind of car T drives. If I had to guess, I'd go with Honda Odyssey based on her family, neighborhood where she lives, etc. Pretty sure she shops at JC Penney. Very mid-range, middle class. Nothing exciting or exotic there.

I loved my Subaru Forester (green, with a "Tree Hugger" bumper sticker -- is there any point getting a different color of that car?) and handed it down to "the kids". Middle son drives it now. My husband barely fit in the passenger seat so it was out of the question when we decided to scale back to one car.

The first one I ever saw, a long long time ago, drove a subaru station wagon. I don't know what one of the two I see now drives. The other has the same car I drove until recently when I got a new one.

My T drives a Subaru Impreza. What surprises me is that she doesn't seem to be "the type," but she has a bunch of bumper stickers on the back. The only reason I know what kind of car she drives is because (I have my phone on silent when I'm there), but as I was walking out of the building, I was reading a text I got, so just leaning against the back of my car (an old one). She must have had a break, or perhaps I was her last session of the day (but it was 3pm?) but she walked out as I was standing there. Said hello and goodbye...she got in her car and buzzed away. So now I know if I get there for my appt and her car's not in the parking lot, she's not there yet! As far as what kind of house, I have no idea, and it's really none of my business.

I drove a car for a while that cost more than many people's houses... I did get a bargain on it, and needed a special car immediately... I have physical needs (leg room, head space, motorized seat with lumbar etc) and few cars have that---always luxury rated.

And if your T sits in a chair all day listening and helping people, and maybe has a longer drive home (or even to another office or hospital) wouldn't you want t to be comfortable and rested on the way??? How would you feel if your T drove a rundown junk? I would rather know that my T was successful and could afford a good car; that he was helping enough people long enough and consistently that he could afford it.

You never know the situation. My best friend use to drive a Lexus that would normally be way over her budget. However, her dad was a used car dealer and mechanic. The car had been in an accident and was totaled. He got it really cheap and did all the repair work. She ended up having it for like 10 years

T drives a new Honda CRV. I know this because I see her as her last patient of the day I often see her leaving with me. She use to drive a truck but traded it when arthritis got bad.

I drive a Honda Odyssey so cost wise it is pretty close to being the same.

There's an investment book with a chapter titled, "Where are the customer's yachts?" that makes the point the broker should not be making obscene money if the customer is not but I don't know if how much money a doctor/therapist/professional makes is comparable. They're all helping people, "how" and what it "means" is part of our judgment of other people and how much we decide they should make. Your therapist might be a famous detective novel writer using a pseudonym and making money hand over fist from that, who knows?

I almost bought a Lexus when I was car shopping. It was an older model, I think a 2002, and had 121k miles on it. It was technically a "'luxury" car and had a fully loaded interior, but it would not have been an indication of my wealth by any means. They were asking 11k for it. I wasn't able to get it because I had no credit at the time, and they wouldn't finance anything over 120k miles to me. Go figure. My dad was upset because he wanted to tell everyone his daughter drove a Lexus. I'm personally happier with my '07 Camry.

Shucks, you should have asked him to finance it My Dad paid off my first car so I had to pay him each month (minus interest) and that worked out well as I was Daddy's little girl
