So my main addiction is to porn. I watch it out of feelings of loneliness and when I watch it, I don't feel as lonely anymore. It temporarily resolves my issues. Lately, I've been watching porn almost everyday. I also do EMDR therapy. Lately in therapy, it's been really hard accessing my emotions. I am unsure if I am feeling numb.

Does giving into my addictions heavily affect me being able to access my emotions during therapy? If so, I will lay off my addiction.

Well, I think resisting any addictions brings a lot of stuff to the fore, so giving in probably does help bury them.

Drugs, alcohol, etc affect people's ability to feel their true emotions, so I wouldn't be surprised if porn did.

I believe that some part of our unconscious brain will perceive porn as violence.
If our more 'animal based brain thinks that we are in a long term violent or threatening environment, it will close off some access to our emotions, so that we can make quicker decisions to escape the violence, or put more energy into physical flight or fight reactions.
So yes, it's possible that your addictions is closing off that emotional part. Maybe try to cut down on it if you can, or watch sexy 'romantic' type movies (if you can bear to ) as they may feel less threatening.

How do you know that you're addicted to porn vs. just enjoy it? What happens if you don't watch for a couple of days? How accessible are your emotions then?

I feel fine after I watch porn...meaning I feel less depressed at the moment. It's like a fix for me. When I don't watch it I feel angry or sad. I feel emotional.
I do EMDR which is a trauma therapy and I was wondering if it really mattered how these things effect me during therapy. I'd like to believe EMDR is powerful enough to make me un-numb, but maybe I need to put some effort in staying away from my addiction to get in touch with my feelings.

I cant speak for porn, but a little nibble off a cannabis edible makes me down right talkative in session.

I cant see how watching porn before session will help your conversation tho, so...

I think I know the answer to my own question. Does making myself numb before therapy make me numb during therapy. I am going to lay off for a while to see if I can access my deep emotions more in therapy. I will find out this week!
