Current T's office has one of those domed cameras at slightly higher than eye level when sitting down. It's hanging from the wall behind one of the armchairs (placed in a circle) and I can see it from the corner of my eye. I'm not too bothered by it because I doubt it records sounds plus I understand the need to protect the T's safety in cases of violent clients but it kind of unnerves me a little to know that there's quite literally an (electronic) eye watching me even when I'm supposed to be alone with T? Current T works in a community centre so I guess all the rooms are equipped with CCTVs so it could be otherwise in private or campus practice, as my ex-T did not have an ostensible one.

It may not even be on, but I would certainly ask about it. I would expect it to be turned off while I am in session.

I noticed a new device installed in the ceiling of my psychiatrist's office. It didn't look like a camera, but it was odd, so I asked her what it was. She looked up and said she didn't know and had been meaning to ask. I think she was being dishonest--either outright lying (which she has done) or just not bothering to ask because she doesn't want to have to tell patients who inquire. Also, she's leaving and doesn't really seem interested in much around there.

I think that would defeat the purpose of it being there - which is to capture evidence in cases where clients attack the T (or vice versa) or in purported cases of sexual harassment. I forgot to mention that the therapy room is strictly for well, therapy, and the Ts have their individual cubicles in a collective office behind the receptionist's counter so the rooms are not in-use when there are no sessions.

That would make me VERY uncomfortable...to the point if finding a new T. While I understand that they may not intend to have it on during my sessions...mistakes happen and I'd hate for it to be on "accidently".

Sometimes things on the ceiling are wi-fi hubs. Sometimes they are other AV equipment (like I have a sound system on my ceiling that looks like a camera but it isn't a camera at all; it's just the sound system I can plug into with my technology). And yes, sometimes things are cameras. It really is hard to tell them apart, but I would ask and find out.

I would not consent to video of any kind, not in an individual session. They can have cameras in the lobby, in the hallways, etc., but my therapy room would be off limits.
Thanks for this!

Oh, it's definitely a camera. There are plenty of those where I live (surveillance state, y'all?) and the lens is pointed towards the armchairs, with one of those red lights. Good point though, I'll check with her if it's really a camera in case it does turn out to be a wifi hub in disguise.

yes my therapist has one in her office, right down to he whole building has camera's including the parking lot. these camera's are not only for her protection but for her clients too. on more than one occasion I didnt remember what went on during and after therapy. All I needed to do was call my therapist and we watched the videos. Her camera's some inside protective plexiglass (unbreakable) domes others not but they all take both audio and visual digital recordings.

No she doesn't, I would like her to have one in the waiting room, or outside her office in the hallway, for her protection. I wouldn't mind one there, or the waiting room or even in her office. Not like anyone would ever watch it unless there was a reason, and the only reason someone would watch one of my sessions would be if they had a wicked case of insomnia.

Good grief, no. I'm not sure it would even be possible to get permission to install CCTV in a therapy room.

I doubt I could feel comfortable with a cctv camera pointed at me. T has filmed a couple sessions, but it was always to rewatch it with me as we were role playing job interviews and stuff like that. I know no one else sees that stuff except maybe her supervisor. I would hate not knowing who could access those images.
