Would you see a t that could prescribe medications? Why or why not?

I would never use drugs but if therapists were legally able to do it (although I don't think they should be able to do so - or just get rid of controlling stuff and make everything available to everyone who wants to buy it and ingest it) in general- I would not be bothered that the therapist could for others. If they tried to push them on me I would have a large problem with that.
I pretty much believe a trained monkey could give out/prescribe drugs if not for the strong medical lobby that keeps the power with them.

Yes, I would I think. It isn't available in my state though. I talked about my reasoning on a different thread.

I've always had them separate so I like that. I get input from different perspectives this way. Plus, most people in my country do not see psychiatrists for therapy.

I would see a prescribing T but I would not take any antidepressants from them...or anyone. They don't work for me.

Probably not...they would probably be out of my budget and I don't want to take medications so I don't need that.

No. I look at it like my eye doctors - i wouldnt get lasix eye surgery (before i got too old for it) because they cant cut the eyeglasses right the first time - i wouldnt trust them to cut my EYES!!! So with all these complaints on here that people cant even have a straight conversation with their t, how would i trust them to understand me or vice versa enough to understand how i am physically feeling, or moodily feeling? Its not that much easier to describe. And these people dont go to med school - i take a few other meds - my own md doesnt prescribe my psych meds, and they have been pretty stable for ten years.

You mean a psychiatrist psychotherapist or other medical doctor who is also a therapist? Sure, if I were looking for a therapist and felt a connection with a therapist who has a background in medicine, I would see that therapist as long as s/he doesn't try to prescribe any pills to me (I don't need any, well at least so far I haven't and I still don't). But MDs with psychotherapy training are rather rare in Romania. Most therapists here are psychologists, and even those who don't have a background in psychology still have to be licensed by the national college of psychologists.

I do, I have my psychotherapy with my psychiatrist. There is a convenience factor in not having to see two different mental health specialists. She's more expensive for me to see than strictly a therapist, however I'd then need my PCP to prescribe my meds anyway, More importantly I just really clicked with my psychiatrist and she can very much relate to the stage in life where I'm at, so the relationship is a good fit for me.
I do want to taper off my Cymbalta next year and if I do I'd still probably see her for maintenance therapy. |

Are you talking specifically about this?
APA Applauds Landmark Illinois Law Allowing Psychologists to Prescribe Medications I would not. EDIT: Thought I would just elaborate a bit. If I thought the individual was equally skilled in both therapy and prescribing, I would for convenience. But I don't think the educational and mental health systems as they stand currently in the U.S. produce many of these individuals.

I'd jump for the chance. Seeing one MH professional instead of two is just more convenient, and since, they'd spent more time with me they'd know where I was symptom wise a lot better.

I like having a psychiatrist who is a real MD. Actually I think my T would insist on me seeing one even if she COULD prescribe because I am fairly treatment resistant. After I had gallbladder surgery I was very dizzy and very weak constantly, and my surgeon brushed it off with "it's anxiety, talk to your pdoc." Anyway, turns out I was very anemic and it was my pdoc who was the one who did the blood tests and discovered it... It seems less likely for a T to discover underlying things like that. Also, I am on an MAOI and even a lot of pdocs aren't comfortable following patients on them because of the risks, so I don't know about a psychologist without med school doing that.

I would not because I am more difficult to treat and it took a very competent psychiatrist to find a medication combo that works for me.
I am actually not concerned that they'd do a worse job than doctors or nurses considering the amount of incompetence prevalent in those professions, but I am not sure either that someone without medical training wouldn't inadvertently cause damage because they lack a comprehensive medical education. I am talking about side effects, interactions with other drugs, other health issues that need to be taken into account. |
