So I started therapy again about a month or so ago after about a two year break. After 5 sessions with the therapist I decided it really wasn't going to work and I actually found her kind of annoying and like she didn't get me. Today I saw a new T and she was really great! She uses more of a psychodynamic approach which is something new for me as all my previous Ts used CBT and ACT mostly. It was really nice to not be given a whole bunch of worksheets and to just talk about things. I feel like this new T really understands me and I was more open with her than I have been with any other T in a first session. I'm looking forward to figuring out the causes of some of the issues I have because even after so much time in therapy (2.5 years before I took a break) I still don't really know what is going on with me sometimes.

I'm glad you found a better fit for you. I like psychodynamic therapy too. It's the kind I'm more used to.

Thanks everyone!

I don't get to see my new T for about another 4 weeks because of the Christmas break so that's kind of a bummer but once we get into a routine it should be good.

On a slightly different topic, have any of you just stopped seeing a T without talking to them about it first? With that T that I saw for 5 sessions I just called the receptionist and cancelled my next session and said I don't want to book another one. I feel like that is kind of rude but I think having another session with that T just to tell her I don't want to see her anymore would just be a waste of time for both of us.

I saw a couple of therapists short time that I cancelled similarly - I didn't worry about it too much. We weren't working that well together and having a session to tell them that probably would have been more for their benefit than mine.

I walked out of a session mid way through and never went back.

He tried to find out why and regretted it!
Not anything sinister, he was just awful at his job and after 2 and a half sessions I wanted to gouge his eyes out because he didn't have a clue

I don't think it's rude to cancel with receptionist. You are a consumer and weren't satisfied with the service, no explanation needed. It would be a waste of money to go back and tell them why you weren't satisfied in fact we should get a refund like other services provide.
It sounds as though you will work well with new t. Sometimes ts are not a right for for is and that is ok as long as you realise that and find a more suitable one for your needs.
I have often gone to see ts once and never returned, yes it might hurt their feelings but they are trained to deal with that.

I don't think it rude at all. I agree that going to a 6th session just to tell her you're done would have been a waste of time. Glad you find a new t that is a good fit so far!!

After only 5 sessions, I don't think it's rude at all.
