This is the kind of clue known as a rebus.

Watches: this is the meaning of the word you're looking for.

Grissom: GUS
cross: The letter T
road: AV, short for avenue

Put the parts together in the order given and you get GUSTAV. Google "Gustav watches" and you learn that Gustav is a brand of watch.

On-spec No. 3 earned the right to be just No. 3 today when she said something unusually perceptive. (Perceptive for anyone, not just a therapist.)

You have to be old enough to remember Gus Grissom and cosmopolitan enough to know about Gustav watches (I didn't). That might be a very narrow audience!

This is always a risk with cryptic crosswords. What they assume as "common knowledge" is often anything but.

Every word is key except for the: "Watches Grissom crossing the road" (6).

Grissom is Virgil Grissom, known as Gus. So GUS must be in there.

There is a type of road crossing known as a T crossing. So T must be in there.

Watches brings to mind audiovisual equipment, AV for short. So AV is there too.

Which spells GUSTAV, the name for which Gus is traditionally short.

At least that's how I make sense of CE's answer. CE probably has a better explanation.

Right... Well.. Carry on.

(Far too cryptic for me)

Found out today we'll be losing our beloved Maestro Jaap van Zweden to the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Fortunately he'll be doing double duty for another year and a half, so we won't have abrupt withdrawal. This is a HUGE move for him though. They are getting a great one.

Hey couch! My brother sent me a box of old photos and stuff that he culled from a bigger box that my Dad had stashed away at one point. He found it all when he was recently at our Mom's house helping her go through stuff. This picture is totally cracking me up as I was such a joyful teenager. This is me at around 13, spreading joy as usual at that age. I wish I'd believed I was beautiful then, I might have smiled more. God I felt ugly then. But look at that hair!!

I hate this!!! I made myself something to eat and choked on every bite and threw most of it away. I made myself a protein drink instead that went down better.
