I have the urge and often wonder what it would be like.
Thanks for this!

No. I imagine it would make one feel like a child.

Why do you get the urge, do you know?

No - I cannot imagine me ever sitting on the floor at the therapist's office. I don't sit on floors much in real life - never if there is a choice of not sitting on the floor.

I actually cannot imagine the first one not mocking someone for sitting on the floor. The second one, who is much more flexible, has said sometimes people curl up in balls on the floor. So I have heard of it being done and a therapist just going with it.
Why do you want to sit on the floor?

Lord, if I spent an hour on the floor they'd have to call in a crane to hoist me back up. The old bones are not as flexible as they used to be.

But even in my more limber days, I can't say I had that urge. What do you think it is about for you?

Yes, I've sat on the floor with both good T's. I kind of melted onto the floor in both situations. One T stayed in her chair and offered me her hand, the other T sat on the floor with me and chatted.

I sometimes feel that urge. Never did it though. To me it feels like a safe place, as if you can't 'fall any lower'. On the other hand, it would make my T seem far above me. When I think about people sitting on the floor it feels to me as if they make themselves very small, give their power away... I don't know if that's a right interpretation though.

But I may not be a good reference. I even used to sleep on the floor for a long time and loved it. Maybe I'm just weird.

Yes. I always want to sit on the floor, too. Perhaps it is because I often feel lowly. Sitting on the floor would allow my t to look down on me even more. Or maybe it's just because I find the odd shaped, fancy chairs to be unsettling.

What prevents you from sitting on the floor?

Yes! OMG, I thought I was the only one. I am an incorrigible floor-sitter. It's more comfortable. I feel more grounded. You can't fall any further than the floor, right? I sit on the floor in the waiting room, but my T's office is way too small to sit on the floor there
Thanks for this!

I used to love to sleep on the floor too. Good for the back. But that seems different to me than sitting on the floor during an appointment with someone. To some people it probably means comfort, but to me a therapy appointment is just not a place to yield any status points to the therapist.
Thanks for this!

Yes. And so I did. I sit on the floor in my own house. I sit on the floor at friend's houses. I like to stretch out my legs. I was feeling a bit stuck and so when I came in, I just sat down. I also wanted to stretch out a bit and the chairs aren't very flexible in that way.

Yes I have done. Back when PTSD was paramount and panic was a frequent companion. My Ts were trauma specialists so they were not at all surprised or upset.

I feel safer and more comfortable on the floor. Its nice and hard and solid. Makes me feel grounded. Plus I can sit or lie in any conceivable position.
Thanks for this!

No. I often wear skirts or other professional clothes so sitting on the floor isn't s good idea. Plus floor would need to be very clean for me to sit on it. But if i must it's tough to get up. I have to roll on to my knees and get up that way. Uncomfortable!

Can't say I've ever had the urge to sit on the floor. Can't help but think of all the germs on the rug. I guess it would be fun to sit side by side and stretch our legs out.
Thanks for this!

I'm a floor-sitter even at my ripe old age.

I sat on the floor a lot with a prior T (or on the Fatboy that she brought in after a while ) and a few times in later therapy or with pdoc. I like it, especially when I'm anxious.

I opened a topic about this a couple of years ago: http://forums.psychcentral.com/psych...ing-floor.html

I did it years ago; going thru a divorce; t sat with me and put his arm around the back of the couch; not touching me, but it was a sweet moment.
Thanks for this!

I think the floor would be to uncomfortable for me plus I am a germ freak. I love the chair that I sit in.

During session I want to curl up into fetal position. This seems easier on the floor because my T has small chairs.

Never had the urge to sit on the floor, but I do miss the unethical one's old worn couch to pull my feet under me. It feels safer.

Current one is in a hospital so her office is not so cozy.

The unethical one...I like that. It suits her to a T.

I have sometimes wanted to pull my feet up under me on the therapists' couches like I was at home, but could never bring myself to get that comfortable.

I used to want to sit in the floor sometimes with my previous T. She was very experiential I guess you could say, and I often went to women's workshops where we sat in the floor in a circle, etc. I think it was just a hold-over from those. It wasn't every week, but sometimes I'd ask and she would sit in the floor with me and we talked like always.

With my current T, I don't sit in the floor (haven't thought about it actually), but I'm a lot smaller now (have lost a substantial amount of weight), and so I'm able to curl up in my seat (it's sort of like a big comfy chair & a half). I usually take my shoes off and end up smooshed back in the corner of the chair with my feet in front of me. At my last session, I actually ended up with a charley horse in my calf from being so tense. I didn't even realize it until I went to move and got the cramp.
