I was pleased to see the question
"Why I am obsessed with my doctor? by Kristina Randle, LCSW June 25, 2007" and answer in this week's PsychCentral newsletter (3July2007). I experienced this fantasy/obsession, but concerning a former psychiatrist, exactly as Kristina describes it, and I felt I was going completely crazy. Although I watched myself doing this, I couldn't stop my emotions from "falling in love" with a figment of my imagination. I finally made myself go to my family doctor for the concomittent generalized anxiety and made myself accept a prescription for medication (venlafaxine). Whether it was the medication or the fatherly attention from my family doctor, the experience stopped abruptly. I have decided it was caused by a grief process following my father's death. What lingers now is only a mild regret over the loss (my fault) of that therapist. I found Kristina's input and the PsychCentral answer useful in putting that experience into perspective. |

You might want to read about Transference also, to get a broader perspective of the emotional attachment.
Besides PC, here is a link to another site that's helpful with this issue: www.guidetopsychology.com. |
