This is kind of off topic but I hope that's ok.

I'm about to watch the movie PRIME (therapist's client is dating the therapist's son yet no one knows - yet) and it got me wondering what other movies/tv shows are out there about therapists and clients. The entire movie/show can be centered around therapy, or just portions of it.
I guess I like to watch movies / shows that can have humor surrounding therapy, hence the topic. Movies, TV shows, etc Anything else out there that our fellow members like to watch?

Prime - Movie
What About Bob - Movie
Monk - Tv

I've not heard of this movie.

But, Monk I love, What About Bob I love too.

And Anayze This.

Books too. P.S. I Love You, 1...2...3..., and Jonathan Kellerman novels center around a therapist.

Lifetime has a series about a therapist coming out soon, but I forget the name of it. And Showtime (I believe) has one about a pdoc called Huff.

I loved Good Will Hunting, in which Robin Williams played a psychologist helping a young genius with an attachment disorder.

I love those novels!

Analyze This and Analyze That, definetely. Anger Managment is another one.

If you're looking for not so funny ones (more dramatic), there's Good Will Hunting and Ordinary People (I think that's what it's called). Also sci-fi ish, K-Pax. If you're looking for more dramatic (scary) ones, there's "The Forgotten".

Interesting book, that I very much enjoy is called "The Good Patient". Not very funny though.

Hi stormyangels,

Sorry, I’m not a big TV/Movie watcher. But I do remember watching a suspense film awhile back where a therapist was deeply involved with a patient’s case. I think it’s called “Don’t Say A Word” with Brittany Murphy in it. Don’t know if it’s what you’re looking for but it was still entertaining regarding the psych world.

I was going to say “What About Bob” but saw you had that listed. Bill Murray is hilarious in that film. I love when Dr. Marvin screams that he wants some peace and quiet, and Bob says he’ll be quiet and Dr. Marvin’s kid says he’ll be peace. Their laughter in that scene is so contagious.

Movies, TV shows, etcI know... I’m so easily amused... *lol*

Hugs. ~ Bee

I think for sure K-Pax was one of my definate favorites. There was another one. . .i can't remember the name of it.. .but the girl was like, fake catatonic and the shirnk figured out she'd been faking it in order to stay institutionalized (to be safe from folks who were after her.) Don't Say a Word. . .that was it.

another of my faves was one called, "The Jacket." It was an indie film, kind of bombed at the theater, but AWESOME.

I loved "The Departed" where the police psychiatrist was dating Matt Damon and also had a crush on Leonardo DiCaprio. (sigh, both at the same time?)

Can't leave you all hanging... here are the lyrics...

"The Couch"

you hadn't seen your father in such a long time
he died in the arms of his lover how dare he
your mother never left the house
she never married anyone else you took it upon yourself to console her

you reminded her so much of your father
so you were banished and you wonder why you're so hypersensitive
and why you can't trust anyone but us
but then how can I begin to forgive her so many years under bridges with dirty water
she was foolish and selfish and cowardly if you ask me

I don't know where to begin in all of my 50 odd years
I have been silently suffering and adapting perpetuating and enduring
who are you younger generation to tell me that I have unresolved problems
not many examples of fruits of this type of excruciating labour

how can you just throw words around like grieve and heal and mourn
I feel fine we may not have been born as awake as you were
it was much harder in those days we had paper routes uphill both ways
we went from school to a job to a wife to instant parenthood

I walked into his office I felt so self-conscious on the couch
he was sitting down across from me he was writing down his hypothesis I don't know
i've got a loving supportive wife who doesn't know how involved she should get
you say his interjecting was him just calling me on my %#@&#!?

just the other day my sweet daughter I was driving past 203 I walked up the stairs in my mind's eye
I remember how they would creak loudly
she was only responsive with a drink he was only responsive by photo
I was only trying to be the best big brother I could

i've walked sometimes confused sometimes ready to crack open wide
sometimes indignant sometimes raw
can you imagine I pay him 75 dollars an hour sometimes
it feels like highway robbery
and sometimes it's peanuts
I wish it could last a couple more hours

so here we both are battling similar demons (not coincidentally)
you see n getting beyond knowing it solely intellectually you're not relinquishing your majestry
you are wise you are warm you are courageous you are big
and I love you more now than I ever have in my whole life

In the original Bob Newhart Show on TV, didn't he play a therapist? He is so funny.

There was a recent TV show called "Cracking Up" that I thought was very funny about a psychology grad student played by Jason Schwartzman who lives with a psychologist and his family to save money. The psychologist's family is completely wacko. My daughter and I thought this show was laugh-out-loud funny, but we must have been the only ones, as it was canceled after only about 6 episodes. Movies, TV shows, etc

I also liked Good Will Hunting, as others here have mentioned. The Matt Damon abused genius character tries out several therapists before he finds one that fits (Robin Williams). He really takes the others for a ride. Pretty funny. I only saw this movie fairly recently and I remember noticing the Robin Williams character self disclosed, always an interesting topic to me, since my T does too, but I know not all do. I remember that the Matt Damon character really uses this self disclosure against the therapist and when he does that, Robin Williams almost punches him out in session. I liked that. I always view my therapist's self disclosure as a real gift to me, and it would be so taboo to use that against him to try to hurt him. So I applauded the near punch out scene.

I have never heard of Analyze This, Analyze That. Is it TV or a movie?

Girl Interrupted is a serious movie about a mental hospital. Along those lines, so is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Thought of another movie: Running With Scissors. This is pretty creepy, funny at times, but ultimately unsettling because it is based on someone's memoir. I thought Jill Clayburgh was very poignant as the wife of the certifiably crazy psychiatrist (who wreaks havoc on his patients).

Bob Newhart is so funny. I loved the end of his next series where he was an innkeeper... and at the end he gets hit in the head with a golf ball, wakes up in bed with Suzanne Pleshette and discovers the innkeeping... was all a dream!

Analyze This and Analyze That are 2 movies, the 2nd a sequel. Billy Crystal becomes an unwilling shrink to a mobster (can't think of the actor's name!). Funny movies, especially the first one.

And what was the movie with Barbara Streisand and Nick Nolte?

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is another good movie. Then there's that one with Angelina Jolie in it... "Girl, Interrupted". I love "Don Juan DeMarco" ... it has Johnny Depp in it. Movies, TV shows, etc It's funny too. Another movie is one people have probably heard of - "Sybil". I thought it was very interesting, but it's dramatic, not funny.

There's also that set of moves about Hannibal Lecter. The first one has the guy that plays Gil Grissom on CSI. Then there's Hannibal, Red Dragon, and Silence of the Lambs. It's a bit freaky set of movies though, but fulfills the "psychological" aspect because of the presence of a psychologist.

Here is an awesome site listing different movies and mental illnesses that they portray.

I think I've seen too many movies! Movies, TV shows, etc Movies, TV shows, etc Movies, TV shows, etc

There was the TV Show "Ally McBeal" before it ended. It had what's-his-name as a shrink (or maybe psychologist) in some episodes. Now that was a ridiculously funny show.

Another movie that wasn't funny, but had psychologist (I think) in it was the movie "Nuremberg". Kind of interesting.

Anger Management is an Adam Sandler movie about therapy. Very weird therapy, and I've seen the movie so many times I'm sick of it, but it's another one.

Hi stormyangels, (again)

It’s funny you posted this today. I flipped on the tv and have been watching a featured movie called “Mumford” starring Loren Dean, Hope Davis, and Jason Lee. It’s a comedy about a guy who’s posing as a psychologist in a small town. It’s a cute film.

It is a great movie, sunny.

I'm a big Denzel Washington fan (have been since St Elsewhere) and he's terrific in it I think Cuba Gooding Jr is also in it. It is also, unfortunately, a true story.

Dune is pretty good. I think they have only done a season or two, however. The main character is a p-doc and there is some stuff about his therapy with this girl who went blind. She teaches him a lot about himself. There is also some stuff with him and his therapist (for his relationship issues and his seperation). The first episode I saw (that got me hooked) was when he persuaded her to give him an MDMA session. I was impressed with her very much.

The Sopranos is pretty interesting too. A mob boss with an anxiety disorder (a tendency to faint when stressed). Lots of stuff with him seeing his therapist and with his therapist talking to her partner (another therapist) and her therapist.

I really love Alanis when I'm in the mood. She has other songs about therapy too. I like the first one on the Album (less clearly about therapy but still about therapy methinks):

Artist: Alanis Morissette
Album: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Song: Front row [aka: the free association song' lol]

do you go to the dungeon
to find out how to make peace with your days in the dungeon
writing a letter to you
didn´t make me feel any more peaceful then how I felt when we weren´t speaking
because I didn´t cop to what I did.
I can´t love you because we´re supposed to have professional boundaries.
i´d like you to be schooled and in awe
as though you were kissed by god full on the lips .

i´m in the front row the front row with popcorn Movies, TV shows, etc
I get to see you see you close up

i´m too tired to recount the unpleasantries one by one
one minute I want to banish you
the next I want to be on a deserted island with you
along with my three favorite cd´s
ambivalent yet in your bed
we´ve yet to acknowledge what really happened
slid into the ditch
I have this overwhelming loss of ambition
we said let´s name thirty good reasons why we shouldn´t be together
I started by saying things like "you smoke" "you live in new jersey (too far)"
you started saying things like "you belong to the world"
all of which could have been easily refuted
but the conversation was hypothetical
I am totally short of breath for you why can´t you shut
your stuff off.....

i´m in the front row the front row with popcorn Movies, TV shows, etc
I get to see you see you close up

and I laughed until my lungs hurt
I love how you bust my chops
you don´t always feel seen sometimes you feel erasable unfortunately I cannot reciprocate in my current state
I think we should be careful of how much time we spend together
........for a while i´m speaking you know how much you hate to be interrupted
maybe spend some time alone to fill up your proverbial cup so that it doesn´t always have to be about you
i´ve been wanting your undivided attention
I like the fact that you´re nothing like me
are you not burdened by the lack of
perspective people have of your charmed life (seemingly)

i´m in the front row the front row with popcorn Movies, TV shows, etc
I get to see you see you close up

you never meant to be ungrateful
nor held up to be whipped or wept for
certainly not analysed
prodded at more ways than one
apparently you´ve been misrepresented
dealing with the concept of arrows being
slung towards your outrageous fortune
hey i´m not mad at you guardian
i´m mad at myself for spending so much time with you and your
jeckyl and hydeness
i´m glad i figuratively slapped you on the wrist
you laughed a wicked laugh
and said "come here let me clip your wings!"
(i know he´s blood but you can still turn him away you
don´t owe him anything)
"raise the roof" he yelled "yeah raise the roof!" I yelled back. (unfortunately you needed a health scare to reprioritize.)
no thanks to the soap box.
having me rile against them
won´t make an ounce of difference......

i´m in the front row the front row with popcorn. Movies, TV shows, etc
I get to see you see you close up

oh the things i´ve done for you
many a sitch a friend a man´s been left for you
oh the books i´ve read for you
the tongues i´ve bitten for you
many a new city for you
many a risk taken for you
(not a single regret)

and this one could be my theme song:

Artist: Alanis Morissette
Album: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie
Song: Ur

burn the books they´ve got too many names and psychosis
all this incriminating evidence would surely haunt me
if someone broke into my house
suits in the living room
do you realize guys I was born in 1974
we´ve got someone here to explain your publishing
we know how much you love to be in front of audiences
hopeful you are
schoolbound you are
naive you are
driven you are
take a trip to new york with your guardian
and your fake identification
when they said "is there something anything
you´d like to know young lady?"
you said "yes I´d like to know what kind of people
i´ll be dealing with"
precocious you are
headstrong you are
terrified you are
ahead of your time you are
don´t mind our staring but
we´re surprised you´re not in a far-gone asylum
we´re surprised you didn´t crack up
lord knows that we would´ve
we would´ve liked to have been there
but you keep pushing us away
resilient you are
big time you are
ruthless you are
precious you are
