Thanks for asking this - I was curious but thought I was probably the only person who didn't know :-) Here, we tip waiters at restaurants, and bartenders, and café staff, if the service has been particularly good... and we might tip a taxi driver, but I can't really think of any other situation where a tip would be usual. (And it is illegal to make somebody depend on tips, or to work without pay - I'm not saying that people are never illegaly employed at below-minimum wage, it's a considerable problem, but it's not an accepted part of how the system works. Which is how I interpret the USAnian situation - I could be entirely wrong.)

We tip all those regularly, including taxi drivers. Hairdressers, doormen, valet parkers, the guy at the hotel who gets you a taxi, delivery people, full-service gas station attendants (which really exist only in New Jersey), exotic dancers (well, I haven't had the chance ), the supermarket bagger if they carry your bags out for you. It's expected depending on the quality of the service, so leaving no tip or an insultingly low one - I left a penny once in a bad diner - is a big deal.

Workers who are regularly tipped like waitstaff make a significantly lower minimum wage by federal law with some variation between states. (Can you say big corporations passing labor costs on to the consumer?) Which is why I refuse to put money in a tip jar - a Starbucks barista is making a higher non-tipped wage already.

The idea of a tip jar is interesting as I would see tipping a specific person as being an incentive to provide better customer service. If everyne gets an equal cut from the tip jar then the employee who puts the least amount of work in is getting rewarded for this.

I usually tip my hairdresser $5 and a waitress at least 20%. I don't have baggers carry my groceries, or full service gas stations, or valets/doormen/taxis around here. I wouldn't be able to make it in a big city!

Had a hella crazy workweek, glad it's over. Probably get some more work done on my flooring this weekend, it's supposed to be warm and dry.

Hope you're all doing well, Couchies.

Many times the tip you give at a restaurant might as well go to a tip jar because it is split with the host/hostess, busboys, etc. The waitstaff keeps the majority but they have to share.

I agree it would be a more sane system, easier and more transparent, to pay people a living wage and change process to reflect that.... But it would be a big shift for the U.S.

I like the way they have Jean Michel jarre Rendevouz IV underneath with another sond I've not identified cut in every now and then. I wish knew the techniques they used.

So I decided my t break has come to an end after 3 weeks. I'm going back tomorrow. And perhaps tomorrow is the day I go in and sit in her chair just to see what happens...

So I broke a figurine in my Ts office.
Not on purpose but I feel awful
I usually move the coffee table out of the way because I sit on the floor
I moved it but clipped the bookcase and a picture fell and the picture knocked a little rabbit figurine off the bookcase and shattered it.
I feel awful.

I have been noticing lately that my sense of smell is almost non-existent at this point. It happened gradually i guess so I never really paid attention to it but I was cleaning the litter boxes last night and literally did not smell anything. H and son said they smelled really bad but I didn't smell a thing. Wonder if that's just an age thing orif I should see dr. Hmm.

Yes, see a doctor ASAP. You may have an asymptomatic sinus infection or something similar. Your balance or your hearing could be affected next.

My T had me stand on my chair a la Dead Poet's Society last session. The different perspective is, well, different. For one, he looks a lot smaller when I look down at him like that - he's a pretty big guy.
I don't know if I'd be brave enough to sit in his chair...

Out of the blue the ex has called three nights in a row to talk to the eight year old, but really to talk to me - he hardly ever calls, and unsurprisingly she doesn't want to talk to him. Last night he was asking me to cook for him. Night before he was asking if I had done my taxes already and if we could file jointly... The man is delusional.

Thanks awkwardly & JS, I just realized something - it might have something to do with the tooth issue - the one they couldn't do a root canal on so I'm getting pulled on the 21st. Hmm. Will ask the dentist.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that! The infection from the tooth may well have gone through to your sinuses. I wouldn't wait til next week though - potential bone infections are not something to be trifled with. You could run into one of those grocery store clinics and get an antibiotic. They're right handy. Walk in, little or no wait time, very reasonable prices.
