No, that's what it means even as an academic award. Or translate with distinction if you prefer.

College level, in the US it usually means 3.5/4 GPA minimum. I assume high school is similar.

There are three extra honors for distinction given to graduates on the basis of grades:
Cum Laude - with praise or honor
Magna Cum Laude - with great honor
Summa Cum Laude - with highest honor

What a funny education system you have. Here you graduate high school with a certificate and your marks determine what university course you can enter.
Thanks for this!

I don't know why it's taken twenty years for this to occur to me...but cum laude etc., those are all ablatives of manner.

I don't know that our system is totally unlike that. Higher your GPA, higher your chances of going to an Ivy League school. Of course, other things like SATs or extracurriculars or legacy status or state/country of origin affect that too.

People go where they can get in and afford it, or where they want to live, or most prestigious school. It's just more free market-y.

My son went to a party at a friends house and us over 21's are out having margaritas. I cried so hard at graduation. Buried my face in hubbies chest and just bawled. I think i finished grieving for my dad tonight. I love my son so much and i am so proud of him and i felt so sad that his grandpa wasn't here to share it with him. But i think he was in a way. It was like he was there in the breeze, stuff like that. I have had too much to drink so i shall stop now. Suffice it to say my h was great tonight. He was my rock while i was so emotionally raw. My mother is much easier to take when she is medicated an i am drunk. Although i do kinda want my t at the moment, i know its the alcohol talking, an i will see her saturday so that is good.

Hey, new couch! Woohoo!
Art, congrats on your sons news. I don't understand your education system either....is it like International Bacalaureat?

Also, just being nosy here..you said you over 21's had cocktails, is it frowned on to give minors alcohol in the US? In the UK, massively generalising here, most people give their own older teens (maybe 16+) beer or cider on occasions, it's quite notable if someone doesn't let their 16 year old have alcohol at parties.

Mine are all given cider at 13. Builds their tolerance

We're a Puritan country with strict drinking ages and stricter laws about giving minors alcohol or cigarettes. You might let your kid drink at home (or they might raid your liquor cabinet), but in public you're asking for trouble.

Not to say that kids can't get alcohol if their fake IDs are good enough.
Thanks for this!

Just gave my boss my two weeks notice to quit. I emailed her, and I'm nervous about her response. I hope she isn't upset or anything.

I can't really get the logic that you can legally get married and start a family before you can have a glass of wine in a restaurant in the US. One is a far more serious responsibility than the other!

The us is full of lunatics who cry child abuse and neglect at every turn and want to regulate every substance that might be pleasurable. It does not make sense. Remember we were responsible for Carry Nation and the idiocy of prohibition. It comes out now in our draconian drug law and the constant barrage of laws continually trying to control women and their bodies. And at the same time, people here drink Bud light - an abomination whose purpose serves only to get people without taste buds drunk.

People can get prosecuted for letting their kids have parties with alcohol. It may be okay to let your own kid have wine with dinner, but if a party is held and the kids drink, it is asking for someone to get arrested or sued.
I think it is nuts, but it happens all the time.

The US is like a mullet (all business up front, party in the back--or, all puritanical up front with a porn studio and home brew in the back), which says as much about our hypocrisy as it does our collective bad taste.

While the over 21's are drinking in public, the under 21's are depleting the nation's liquor reserves at home or under bridges. So, basically, there are laws and then there's what really happens.

Not sure if anyone has an affection for makeup like I do but I just got the Alice In Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass eye shadow pallet and I'm in love. The packaging is sooooooo incredible beautiful.

Ohh, I just googled that...it is all kinds of gorgeous! I wouldn't know what to do with that much eye shadow, however...I suck at applying it.

I'll teach you 😊. I have a dresser dedicated to makeup (probably shouldn't be admitting this) and 2 drawers of 9 are eyeshadows!

I remember my mother trying to get me to wear make up. I did not like the way it felt on my face and rebelled against the idea that women need to change the way they look for others when men are not expected to do so.
