Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions causes a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells. Onion toxicity can cause the red blood cells circulating through your pet's body to burst.

Thank you for asking. In a word: Gaaaah. My closest boss was fired - sorry, moved to other duties - before the summer but the dept heads had no plan for how to replace her, so the rest of us now have to pick up her many duties and learn how to perform them without losing any of our previous tasks. That is, we could cut down on other things and the union tells us we should do so, but for various reasons that would be a bad idea. So we're insanely stressed and feeling the massive lack of interest in what we do from the department, we are all a bit worried that we might be next in front of the firing squad, and I really miss my ex boss.

Oh, and my best friend works in the same building and that's a whole 'nother layer of pain. And I miss my old dept acutely - I hate working for this department. And seeing T yesterday was not good. So, yeah, gaaaaah.

This vet I saw got quite annoyed when i said it caused anemia. So she is wrong? It all says heamolytic anaemia so she must be wrong. Haemolsis os the burtsting of blood cells so should I trust this vet? (I don't got to her any more anyway)

You are both correct. The onions metabolites cause a change in hemoglobin precipitates ( sulfhemoglobin) which in turn causes the red blood cells to become fragile and prone to rupture aka hemolysis or the breaking down of blood cells.
Thanks for this!

BunYip - Would you like to create the next couch for me when it's ready to be done? I'm not feeling too well and not sure if I'll be in the hospital or what state of mind I'll be in when the 1,000th post comes around.

Hey couch. I'm away this week (with the in-laws ) and I spent last session with T talking about ways to cope with what is normally a very stressful and unhappy experience for me.
We talked about what action I can take to make things more positive. Among many other things, T said "If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got" and I have been quoting this to myself many times a day.
I am choosing not to react to the myriad of ways my in laws can drive me insane, and as a result I am finding myself more relaxed, I feel on the same team as H, and generally I feel better than I have felt out of routine in years. There might be something in this therapy lark!

I would be delighted to. But if I haven't made it by post 998 I may have to share responsibility with someone else.
You keep safe young lady.
Consider me ensconced in your pocket.

Got new cat to sit on my lap for a few minutes. As junior cat abhors laps (he thinks they're for wusses), this is a promising sign.

There should be a pocket riders song! How about (clears throat, blows pitch pipe):

Put me in your pocket so I'll be close to you
No more will you be lonesome and no more will you be blue
And when we have to part, dear, there'll be no sad adieus
For I'll be in your pocket and I'll go along with you.

Thanks for this!
