well i seen my new t today.. not sure if i like her yet or not...... at first she kinda made me mad cause she was like u might not have depression the way u feel might be from ur sleep apnea.. and i was like some of it might be but not all..... then i started telling her more about me and how i feel... and as we talked more and more i started to kinda like her.. i have mixed feelings right now about her... not sure if i like her yet completely but ill soon know after seeing her a few more times...... shes said her dx for me is bipolar II....... i told her that my old pdoc kept changing it on me.. first bipolar then just mood disorder then shizoaffected so i wasnt sure what my dx is..... she said that she would dx me with bipolar II and that shes certain the new pdoc will agree with her... she said i defentaly need to get back on meds.. cause my moods arent stable... and shes said i def. need to work on my anger... shes said she can tell by the way i describe things that i have alot of anger inside...... i told yeah.... i dont gop back till the 23rd.. i will see new pdoc that day as well as her.....

How does she know for sure you are Bipolar II after one meeting?

She's dx'ing you AFTER ONE SESSION?

This chic is the wonderwoman of psychotherapists if she can make a diagnosis in an hour.

Skittles,

If I were in your position I would try to find someone new if a therapist tried to slap a label on me after 1 hour. The psychiatrist is the one who is supposed to make a diagnoses, not the therapist, and I have never even had a psychiatrist try to dx me after 1 visit.

I'm glad you like the new t, but this would throw up red flags for me.

skittles, that seems a long time between visits to the therapist to me. You mention you have anger issues to work on, and I would guess you want to work on managing mood symptoms. And maybe other stuff. Sounds like a lot of stuff to work on in therapy and I wonder if 3 weeks plus between visits to the T will be effective? Or will you see her more frequently after that?

Your T does seem focused on diagnosis, but sometimes they approach new clients that way, based on their training and the requirements of the insurance. (Gemstone, The T often makes a diagnosis without a pdoc. They are trained to do that, plus many clients don't see a pdoc also.) I'm not one who favors the medical approach for myself so I probably wouldn't like it if my T focused so much on diagnosis in the first visit, but I know insurance can place strict requirements on them. Hopefully, you will move on to therapy the next visit. I hope you end up liking your T--sounds like maybe there is a chance. Great! If therapy is to be successful, that's half the battle. Good luck.

yeah...curious about the first meeting dx too. I'm kinda against T's doing a dx unless they are PhD anyway though...just me. i mean, i'd rather have my doctor dx my knee probs than my chiro even if the chiro knows me more. Just a matter of training. But up to whoever...

and the criteria are so close for those things... spectrum really... i wouldn't be certain any two professionals would agree anyway. Try telling a MD Pdoc that a T dx'd you and see what rxn you get! seen new t today

the liking or not liking really is a time thing.. i've seen mine for 5 months now and i've waivered. i mean i like him insofar as he seems nice enough, but as far as being right for me? On the fence a lot about it. Try coming up with a list of things that are important to you, and ask her. i did an interview process when i was "shopping" for one.

don't take offense anyone to the dx thing, just my thing.

much love and peace

I have been with a T for a year and I finally got the courage to ask what my dx was - he told me that dx's are not that important but this is what he thought. I am sure it took a while for him to come up with my dx - because I don't think I present some of the criteria at first. But he hit the nail on the head when I read up on the dx's. One meeting is to quick to dx. It takes time - imho. Whether you like her or not - well sometimes you have to feel people out. Give them a few meetings to see. Also I know for me I need my T weekly - who am I kidding I would be there everyday if I could. Is she on vacation and that is why so long between sessions? Later in the relationship I know people taper down but in the beginning it is usually once a week. I don't know if any of this is helpful. Just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you.

(((Skittles)))

If you like her, trust your gut, and listen to you heart.

Maybe her quick dx was because she wants you to be safe? It may change over time and with pdoc's consult.

Take gentle care.

well she was stating her opion about the dx... she said if she was the one that was going to dx me that she would say bipolar II.... thats why shes having me see pdoc to.. wants me to get back on meds as well i i want to to........ plus she wants the pdoc to see me..... im not sure that i like her yet... its will take a few more times going.... but with me if was comforting for her to say what she thought the dx was cause im the type of person who wants ... who NEEDS to know or it will drive me crazy..... the thing that bothered me and the thing why i think i might not like her is when i fist went in the room she didnt even ask my deprsin history or anything... she was like u have any helath issues.. i said only sleep apnea.. shes was like i might not be depressed then it could be that........ i got SO Mad..... i was like it might partly be from that but NOT ALL......... she doesnt know anything about me and she tells me i prob dont have depression...grrrrr i wnted to walk out of the room... then as i started telling her more and more about me she came up with bipolar II...... its like ***** u dont know me or what i go through and u didnt even ask .. u just made u dumb comment.. but im gonna give her another try and see what happens.....
