Dear Art:

I actually said it already in our session earlier. And what I didn't say, my hug did.

Dear ATAT,

You're the first client to laugh at me when you caught me bs'ing you.

Most clients don't even spot the bs.

Dear Ellah,

You will be okay again.
Just remember to take each hour at a time.
Not backward and not forward.
One hour at a time.
You got this.

Dear Client --

When you cancel a session and I ask you why, and you (unfortunately for you) confess that you need a break, I take that as an open invitation to wear you down with my check-ins (after of course telling you that I respect your wishes) until given your general discomfort with confrontation, you will just agree to show up for the session because you will assume not doing so would be churlish.

I will of course interpret this as healthy behavior regardless of how you feel about your inability to stand up to someone you're actually paying $$$ to. Good luck working on that assertiveness stuff (clearly not with me).

Dear Mona,
What happened last night? You are usually so engaged but last night I found you going back into yourself and not looking at me. You know this frustrates me so much. You remind me so much of myself sometimes. I wish you would tell me what you are thinking and feeling sometimes. I tell you too much and I realise this.

What you did was really hard yesterday and you did so well. I am proud of you, and I wish you hadn't gone through that as a child. Thank you for allowing me to be alongside you.

(this would be absolutely ideal response from T to my email asking for some support)

Dear Brazen,

I want to protect you from the hurt you feel. I know I can't, and I know when I try to it backfires, but I really do wish I could take the pain away for you. I'll be here and let you take your time. I'm trying to understand.

T.

This would totally piss me off and result in an even stonier demeanor than usual.
(telling women to smile more, even in a positive way, really pisses me off)
(this is not meant to detract from or cast any doubt upon ATAT's brilliant smile)

I just assumed DBC was coming on to ATAT (Hawaiian-shirted husband notwithstanding)?

I am surprised that you are accepting the word of a therapist that I have a brilliant smile.

*smiles brilliantly*

I get the impression she really digs said husband, despite his questionable taste in fashion.

This is one of the many reasons I don't let the first one I see talk at all.

Your brilliant smile will light your way to the future. Kind of like a car's flood lights in the fog.

Or possibly a lighthouse. Your brilliant smile will guide the ship of hope to your shores.

Or maybe your brilliant smile will light the way to the lighthouse.
Like the Virginia Woolf novel.

At least, that's what my T would say. He's big on clumsy metaphors. They start off promising, but always end with him looking disappointed in himself.

You're still here.
Let's find you.
