I decided that I don't want to deal with my current pdoc (since he decided I should get a 2nd opinion.... by way of telling me T to let me know this). I really can't even look at his face and have an uncontrollable urge to punch him.

So then there's another pdoc there. Both him and my current pdoc work in private practice together, outside of the consultation center. Forget that. Plus, the pdocs where I go don't take insurance and I just can't afford this on top of therapy.

It was very difficult, but I got an appointment with a doctor who accepts my insurance. It wasn't hard to find a doc who accepts my insurance, it was hard to find one who was taking new patients. Also, a lot of the places I called said that I would have to go to therapy there in order to see the psychiatrist.

It was actually pretty funny because as I was sorting through the list of doctors, I had to filter a couple of them out because I work with them at my internship.

My appointment is on September 18th. There was only one doctor available from this particular network that is able to accept new patients. I was so nervous that the doctor would be female. The receptionist only used the doctor's name and I was listening for a "he" or "she" but nothing was mentioned. Finally at the very end of the phone call I asked, "Is this doctor a male or female?" The receptionist said, "Male. We actually don't even have any female psychiatrists who work here." A new Pdoc. We'll call him #7. Whew.

My 7th pdoc 8 years. The first question the woman asked was, "Have you ever been in mental health treatment before?" A new Pdoc. We'll call him #7.

Congrats on getting the appointment lined up. 7 is my lucky number--hope it will be lucky for you! pdocs are very expensive, so I'm glad you found one your insurance will cover. Will your former pdoc send your records over or will you start from scratch?

Glad you found someone that accepts your insurance. If you want to share, why did you want a male pdoc? I'm always interested in people's preferences. Personally, I always get female doctors even if it is just a dermatologist or something like that, but definately for a T or pdoc. Come to think of it, I always try to get female professionals in general...lawyers, accountants, stuff like that. I think it is a mix of feeling more comfortable and also wanting to support women professionals. Anyway, hope you click with the new pdoc and don't have to start from scratch.

Oo this was an interesting thread a while back! I'm like Pinksoil and also prefer male doctors across the board. And I would only go to a male therapist (one of my requirements when a friend of mine offered to help me find a therapist).

Pink, I'm glad you found a new pdoc! That whole 2nd opinion thing would have made me want a new one too. Hope the new one will be better!

I choose male professionals for everything. Dermatologist, therapist, psychiatrist, primary care dr, and yes, even my gynecologist is male. I even get annoyed when I have to take a class that has a woman professor. I'm sure it has a lot to do with relationship with my mother growing up... (always blame the mother, lol) and my close alignment with my father. I have some female friends that I can connect with. It's interesting because my very 1st T when I was 17, was a female. At this point, I could never even entertain the thought of connecting with a female T or working with a female pdoc.
