The poll thing on this one is tricky and will probably not come to fruition.

I don't have poll anwers but I listened to a very interesting TED talk on the science of happiness today. In a nutshell our brain has a built in survival mechanism that helps us to he happy in our circumstances ( not like torture or whatever, but like, getting a new job, better house, more money does not generally make people happier even though everyone thinks it will).....but in capitalistic western countries we are basically taught this is fake ( researcher wss American, can't vouch for all cultures etc but he made a general statement). Being happy in your current circumstances and not feeling the need for something better is "settling" and looked down upon....becausr consumerism requires us to want new things or the economy tanks...we only want happiness from achieving/winning etc not just happiness from INSIDE ourselves.

Likewise I think we look at relationships as needing to be 100% natural to be valuable, even though that naturalness is an illusion ( the majority of people you are friends with come into your life due to certain commonalities--work, kids, shared interest etc--- not two souls inextricably drawn to each other). Again we want the relationship to be about something we did to EARN it

So "you are paying them to be your friend " is an attack, an insult, the same as saying " your boyfriend could have anyone , he is just settling for you" .

Just my 2 cents. The TED talk is fascinating. The brains ability to influence our level of happiness based on what we already hsve works even in patients with short term memory loss who can't remember what they have consciously

More balanced. Exhausted, nothing new there. Home on a Wednesday night is strange. I have a new comforter set on my front porch buuuuttttt I don't wanna go get it so I am taking a nap before baseball instead.

I get that it is an insult - just one that fascinates me - both from the person who says it and the recipient's reaction.

I suppose one thing that could be said about how I use those guys - accusing me of paying them to be a friend is really far fetched.
I am more likely to use them as a paid enemy.

I used mine to practice being assertive and take up for myself. I figured I was paying her and she would not be offended if I just said what I really wanted to say. Turns out it didn't translate into real life, but I did learn that the sky didn't fall when I disagreed or spoke up.

Man I'm sure sorry I shared that my h told me that ! The paid friend thing. Ugh.

I was actually trying to be supportive of you and how even I don't think they are paid friends. I was not trying to upset you.

And then I just thought the idea interesting as I thought more about it.

I connected my amazon echo to my siriusxm account - I like listening to the Radio Classics channel - the mysteries, comedies and detectives are my favorites. Not so much the dramas and the westerns.

It can help if you don't care if they get offended.

Oh I like the old radio mystery shows too! I have a bunch of CD's of them.

They are also on some free apps - before the xm radio thing - I would listen to them on the app when I walked the dogs

I know I'm way late to the medical examiner thing, but one of the science teachers at school has a preserved cat in a huge mason jar. His name is Macaroni. It's the coolest specimen I've ever seen. Kids love it too.
