Would you trust a therapist who has had a significant lawsuit filed against them in the past, if the lawsuit didn't have anything to do with one of their clients?

So.... I staterted seeing another therapist in addition to my current therapist that I've been seeing for a few years. Because of the excruciating attachment work, I just felt like I needed extra support and she was okay with seeing me at a reduced rate. I just looked her up online and saw that she had a lawsuit filed against her and was sued a few years ago. Her and I have done some pretty good work, but this is really distracting and disturbing for me. Do I trust her? Would you trust a therapist who has broken the law?

Honestly, it would depend on what it was. If it was a lawsuit, that suggest a civil matter rather than a criminal one, so she may not have broken the law. If it was, say, something in a divorce case, that likely wouldn't bother me. Or if it was from a car accident and there was some confusion over whose fault it was (and maybe her insurance was refusing to pay). Do you know if she won or lost the lawsuit? If she won, it also could have been something frivolous, and the other person didn't really have a case.

I assume it's public record, which is how you found it. If it's affecting your therapy, I think you need to bring it up with her.
Thanks for this!

Hi LT, thanks for this! Can I PM you? I don't really want to go into details about what is was on the public forum.

Agree with LT. it depends on what the lawsuit is about.
Keep in mind, anyone can file a lawsuit or make a complaint. It doesn’t mean T is guilty.
Does it say if the lawsuit was resolved?

Would you want to check your therapist’s license through their licensingl board to see if she has disciplines against it?
Thanks for this!

Frankly, if the lawsuit was not related to any of her clients or any of her professional responsibilities, I wouldn't care at all.

If she has done some good work with you and you haven't had problems with her on a professional level, isn't this the most important thing? Why should anything about her life outside of her work with you matter?

I wouldn't even bother to know what happened and whether she was guilty of anything. If she was, she and the plaintiffs have already had their chance in court and it's already over. I would not put a burden of being a judge in this matter upon myself, as it has no connection with my work with the therapist and has no effect on my life whatsoever.

If it was something that would have been concerning, it would have been reflected in T's credentials. I'd just check the board. If the T is clear with them, you are clear.
