So I just got out of IP. Long story don't worry about. I assumed I was going to be jobless; because, I hadn't worked long enough to gain fmla. Then I found out hr had tried to call me. I called back. They wanted me to talk to the company that handles all our leave. I figured I was screwed, but hey, what's a phone call going to hurt, right? Well, turns out I worked so much in the past two months I gained a full years benefits for fmla. (I just recently hit the 60 day mark too.) However, there's one huge stipulation: I need permission saying I am "mentally fit to work." My pdoc is on vacation. My T is a psychologist, and she is very ethically inclined. She will not just write a note, and she won't fudge it. This means I have to have one of those full on lengthy head exams. She may very well say no. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if she just said her answer was going to be no before I even tell her I needed the report, being that I didn't call her office to let her know I was having a mental health emergency in the first place. Plus I don't want to waste time. I do need a T appointment, but my job is getting PO'd at me b/c I'm getting an initial back to work day of sometime at the end of November, since I don't have report. I need the report NOW. I also NEED therapy.

Well since you decided a phone call wouldn't hurt, and it turned out to be a very good idea, could you take the same approach with asking for an appointment to get a note?
Thanks for this!

That's what I'm doing, but I've had to do this once before for time off for med change issue. Answer: Report first. This was before IP treatment without informing the office and ghosting for a few weeks. (The ghosting was a scheduling issue though.) The job I work is kind of a higher level security job btw, and my T is a little anti-certain types of MI people "running amok."

She doesn't have the qualifications to write this one up. The company that runs my leave wouldn't except her notes, as she doesn't deal with my health issues related to my absence.

Maybe I'm not understanding, but can't you be mentally fit to work and also still need therapy?
Thanks for this!

Yes, the problem is it up to my T to determine after my recent inpatient experience whether or not I'm mentally fit. She has to do a report making her decision before my company allows me to go back. I'm not sure, how the report is going to turn out. Additionally, my T might just advise me that she already cannot support my return to work.

It can't hurt to ask your therapist. Work obviously wants you back so they may be ok even if she says she needs to re-evaluate in 2 weeks or whatever.

I'm sure work actually wants me back or if they're just covering their butts because of the ADA law.

In my experience if they want to get rid of you they'll find a way around the law so I'd bet they want to keep you.
