The termination thread reminded me of how that word has always bugged me. It suggests being fired and/or death. As opposed to the end of a journey, which is what I think it was originally supposed to indicate in the context.
I put up a poll for possible alternatives, drawn from the thesaurus, but what do you think of the word/what would you substitute and why? I like the Greek word telos myself, it means that one's object has been achieved or completed. |

I would choose quitting or coming to my senses.

I agree. I hate the word "termination." I think of it as associated with death--as in, she has a "terminal" illness. Any of the other words you suggested would actually be better!

How about "emancipation"?

No - for me emancipation does not work for therapy.

I assume it's a word indicating stopping therapy with one particular therapist. They can instigate it when they think they've done all they can do with that client. Am I right? I guess it would be a word also used when the client tells the therapist about wanting to end therapy, would it not?
Of course, some clients are very happy to stop therapy--like they were a slave? Hence, emancipation? ![]() |

"Termination" is the ending of a relationship between therapist and client. It could be by mutual agreement, or be initiated by either therapist or client. Sometimes one party fires the other.

Focussed withdrawal. I have used the word concluding. I had a very silly T say I'd used the word termination in relationship to a job for some reason pertaining to me when that's what it's called like " You're calling it a table " - it's CALLED a table are you nuts ?!!

This reminds me of that Fritz Perls saying, "you have to lose your mind to come to your senses". |

I dont think thats what ts think termination is. I could be wrong. Its when the work is done, complete. You can stop working with a t without it being a termination. You just stop working with them, or stop seeing them. I think this is more often the case than that the work is completed.

That would make more sense...except they keep offering me “termination sessions” when I leave even though the work is nowhere near complete. So maybe the therapists don’t even know what it is themselves. Last edited by atisketatasket; Nov 21, 2017 at 08:10 PM. |

For me, it has more to do with the nature of the therapist and our parting. I've been ditched and also did some ditching with a couple. In other cases, they've moved or died or given up hope. With one, I escaped. I also replaced one with a new car. I don't know what I will call it when my therapist retires. The end of all things, maybe.
I loathe the word termination. |

I voted for closure/closing. I think I like it because it makes me think of a door and when one door closes another opens. Or maybe that passing through a door (to move from one side to another) indicates a transition from one experience on one side of the door to another experience on the other side of the door. I am personally working on bringing a gentle acceptance to each experience in my life, moment by moment. Therefore, the words closure/closing are the most meaningful to me. I hope this makes sense!

Does it need a word?
Can't I just say I stopped seeing Blondie (or Medea)? The place I used to work at earlier would call firing people, "separations". I think I revolted against all euphemisms from then on (although I wasn't one of the folks dealing with the "separation"). |

When I was having a horrible ending with a T, I called it
TERMIGEDDON. I have no idea what to call a mutually agreed upon ending. Good question.

I think termination is fine. I mean, it is like death or being fired. Tell it like it is...

Huh. It is very tempting to get a new car instead of seeing Info, even though the current car is fibe. I could lease or pay off the loan for 2-3 new cars a month at Info’s rates.
Future poll question, would you prefer your therapist or a new car? Quote:
I like it. So by my count I have had...five TERMIGEDDONs. |

Same here. I could also buy one to three new iPhones a month, depending on the model. Instead, I'm still using an iPhone 5S that a friend gave me for free because my old phone was so crappy that he felt bad for me.
