Doing my annual viewing of It's a Wonderful Life. After watching it last year, sent ex-T and MC e-mails saying how maybe they were my imperfect guardian angels and how I hoped they received their wings someday because they deserved them. They each responded, thanking me and saying it was kind (or something to that effect). Less sure how I feel about each of them now... And I feel sadness that I have those doubts, particularly regarding MC. (Too soon to feel any of that about current T--and even if I did, no way I'd e-mail him about it!)

So...Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, and Happy Monday to those who don't!
Thanks for this!

So the being friends with t issue kind of resolved itself for me - the fantasy is intact, but the reality is sooooo busted. But i can live with that.
The point of Jack Sprat and his wife is, that in spite of their differences, together they "licked the platter clean". A marriage of opposites produces an effective partnership.

Signs I've spent too much time on PC: I'm diagnosing the characters on It's a Wonderful Life. Uncle Billy had ADHD. Mr. Potter was a narcissist. Etc.

I am more of A Bishop's Wife fan. Never could get into It's a Wonderful Life. I wanted to club most of the characters in that movie and push jimmy stewart off the bridge. I don't like Christmas Story either. I like to compare Christmas Carol versions. I also enjoy the music in White Christmas - but the actual story (what little of one there is) I find too silly.
I wonder if any one could accurately match posters here to their favorite holiday movie.

Also not a fan of Christmas Story. Trying to remember which Christmas Carol version was my favorite...I think it involved Scrooge riding down the banister on Christmas morning, if that helps (or, I'm totally making that up!)

Also, my mom was into Miracle on 34th Street (the original, of course), but I always found it to be so slow-moving (kinda like the first 45 minutes or so of It's a Wonderful Life--which I usually skip).

I also really dislike Miracle on 34th St. and any of the modern santa claus movies. I like the versions of Christmas Carol with George C. Scott and the one with Patrick Stewart and Scrooged (except at the end when bill murray is just flat annoying).

Back from my walk, the lights are pretty but it's nice out so people have their doors open and you can hear all the fun they are having. I'm back in my house now and opening another bottle of wine and having a one-woman pity party.

I like the Grinch cartoon but cannot stand the movie version with Jim Carrey (who I dislike in general)

My first introduction to It’s a Wonderful Life was a grade school screening of a version where Mary takes George’s role and George takes Mary’s. I am pretty sure Cloris Leachman was the angel.

As a result I can’t shake the image of George Bailey being a stay at home dad when I watch the original.

Eta: I adore George C. Scott. Is it me or do actors with middle initials rock? Edward G. Robinson. William H. Macy.

Wait, no...Vivica A. Fox. Scratch that.

I wish she would come back. But she won't. They never do. It's astonishing how good I am at attracting people who are emotionally unavailable and will abandon me.

Oh, interesting. Would be curious to see that version. I never actually saw the movie till my late 20s, I think, and it really affected me then, because I'd often doubted that my life really had meaning.

Possible trigger:
.

I tend to get all weepy at the whole book inscription of "No man is a failure if he has friends." I say this as someone who has had some close friends abandon her...so I don't think it's really just about friends. I think it's the message of the whole movie, how you don't realize how much your life impacts that of other people. Including in seemingly minor ways, like that whole thing about how the flapping of a butterfly's wings can affect things on the other side of the world.

Ah, I hadn’t heard of “It’s a Wonderful Life” but now see that it’ll be playing this week at a place near me — worth it to watch it on the big screen vs home?
Thanks for this!

It might be fun, like how they do a sing along to Fiddler sometimes? Only its not a musical, altho there is some music. Its very sentimental and warm.

*ponders a way to dissuade AY from watching it—aha!*

I bet current t looooves It’s a Wonderful Life.

More seriously, I would watch at home because it’s likely to bring out the cynic in you.

But, but, but, I need to bond with current T over Amreeka (that for some reason, my phone thinks needs to be changed to Amtrak).

Pshaw, ATAT — I won’t be cynical about old-timey movies. The plot sounds sweet.

ETA: And, Una, I did not miss your gingerly attempting to warn me about it being sentimental and warm. Am totally watching it.

Well, when you’re done I’ll give you my spiel about how Capra’s Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is in fact anti-democracy and pro-tyranny. Despite its reputation otherwise.

It doesn’t have Lionel Barrymore , but it does have Jean Arthur.
